MCU is known for taking care of continuity. But recently, the fans spotted that Captain America’s shield, which got passed down to Sam Wilson, has changed. Is it deliberate or just a mistake?
Despite having a massive list of films and characters to managing, Marvel has managed to keep the continuity alive for the most part. It’s almost a miracle that the creators have completed 27 films in roughly 15 years. That works out to about two films per year. On top of that, there is an entire lineup of TV shows. Hence, it has to perform the difficult task of upholding the continuity maintained in the films. Even the best can make mistakes now and then. One such blunder occurred in the design of Captain America‘s shield after the superhero left the MCU in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘.

Captain America Shield design change
Yes, fans have noticed that the Caps shield he gave to Sam Wilson at the end of ‘Endgame’ differs from the usual shield Steve Rogers wears. It was first part of the movie ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘. The series has been running for about a year, and it depicts the two closest people to Captain America, Bucky and Sam Wilson, coming to terms with Rogers’ death.

The shield was gifted to Sam which he dons now. Bu the eagle-eyed fans have noticed that it is a little different than the shield Captain America donned gloriously through his time in the MCU. The star at the centre has added points, and the outer grey rim is also quite different. So, is Marvel deliberately trying to fool its fans, thinking they wouldn’t notice?
As it happens, the prop master at the Marvel Studios has a legit explanation for the alterations in the shield. As per him, the shield was handed over to Sam by Steve, with the latter also adding that ‘it was his shield’. Russell Bobbitt, the in-charge of props, has said that he interpreted Steve’s final words to his friend on his own. He believed that Rogers meant that he had made some improvements to the shield when he was passing the torch.
Upgraded Shield for an Upgraded Cap
It seems like a legit explanation. But given Marvel’s history, they are known to make these small changes when the superheroes move from project to project. Some changes might be more obvious than others, but there are changes nevertheless. Props define the characters, and as the character development happens between the characters, slight changes in appearances subconsciously make the audience easily adapt to that transformation.
The shield had to change now that the torch had been passed between Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. When it was in Cap’s hands, it appeared more classical. Whereas when it was in The Falcon’s hands, it appeared more modern. It indicates that Sam Wilson represents the next generation of Marvel heroes.
Perhaps this isn’t the last change to the shield. There will be more. Let’s see what happens to the shield when it passes to someone else.
