When Mark Sheppard exited ‘Supernatural’ at the end of season 12, fans were shocked. Now, they are, however, hopeful of Mark Sheppard’s return in season 15 of ‘Supernatural’. Does that mean Crowley might come back from the dead in the show’s finale? Let’s find out!
The final season of ‘Supernatural’ was up and running until the Covid-19 pandemic brought it to a halt. With Hollywood slowly returning to its usual normal, the remaining and final seven episodes of ‘Supernatural’ Season 15 will be aired this fall. Rumours of Mark Sheppard returning for ‘Supernatural’ Season 15 have been going around since last year.
Unfortunately, Sheppard has been a no-show in the already aired episodes of the show’s final season. Is there any chance of him returning in the upcoming episodes? Let’s find out.

Mark Sheppard’s exit controversy
Mark Sheppard’s character, Crowley, has been a fan-favourite since it was introduced in season 5 of the show. Despite his indisputable demonic personality, Crowley grew on the Winchester brothers as they formed an unconventional bond with him. Although Crowley’s traits demand him to be untrustworthy, he did, on multiple occasions, saved Sam and Dean. In the shocking finale of ‘Supernatural’ Season 12, Crowley met his end, sacrificing his life and trying to save the Winchester brothers.
That’s just how it worked out on the screen. Although the reason for Sheppard’s exit from the show is unclear, the best guesses suggest that the actor was involved in a tiff with the producers and the writers. Moreover, the actor found it hard to accept the send-off that his character received. Speaking at a comic-con panel in New York, the actor said,
“Once they decided they needed to do something different [with the direction of the show], they tried to get rid of me without telling me that they were going to get rid of me. But it became so apparent … It wasn’t this big bombshell at the end”.
While describing his character’s death, the actor said:
“[it was] the slowest, most painful death I’ve ever seen. I’d gone from being the smartest character on the show to being the dumbest character on the show in two seasons. They ran out of what to do”.
Fans, however, had been rooting for Mark Sheppard to return for season 15 of ‘Supernatural’. Although that hasn’t happened yet, the question is if he would return for the remaining episodes of the final season.
Fans are disappointed about Sheppard not returning yet
Last year, rumours about Mark Sheppard returning for ‘Supernatural’ Season15 started spreading like wildfire. Fans were on the edge of their seats trying to figure out the answer to the “will he, won’t he” question. As of now, the first half of season 15 has not brought Sheppard in yet, leaving the fans disappointed. Sheppard’s absence from the final season has been labelled as “too bad” by some fans.
A fan wrote on “Reddit”, “Ahh I didn’t know he wasn’t going to return. That makes me sad. Crowley was always one of my favourites in the show, and I was always hoping they could show him one last time, or have him be in one more episode seeing on how they’ve showed other characters”.
In the ‘Supernatural’ world, demons and angels who meet their ends are trapped in “The Empty”, an afterlife void. While it’s true that major characters like Jack and Castiel have resurrected and returned from “The Empty”, it is doubtful if Crowley would be brought back.
Show-runner wants a good reason to bring Sheppard back
The answer to whether Mark Sheppard could return for ‘Supernatural’ Season 15 lies in the fundamental question – “Is it good enough?” Most fans would agree that seeing Sheppard return as Crowley one last time would be the best way to say goodbye to the show. However, show-runner Andrew Dabb feels that even the slightest chance of Crowley’s return would require a “really good reason”.
Dabb justified his opinion stating that Crowley’s fate lies with the “The Empty”. “The Empty” which is seen as a character in itself has Crowley in its trap and would need a very good reason to wake Crowley up from death. However, Dabb is not sure that any such good reasons have surfaced yet.
Of course, one also needs to remember that Sheppard has been firmly vocal about not having any intention to return to the show. Therefore, it still seems unlikely that Mark Sheppard would agree to return for the finale of ‘Supernatural’ Season 15.
