Artists, activists, filmmakers wrote to PM Narendra Modi, concerned over the rising lynching of minorities
It has become general news of a fixed format in the past few months. lynching cases keeping cropping up nowadays. And the victims are always the minorities, especially the Dalits and the Muslims. It has indeed created an air of fear for the minorities as a whole. Even though some of these incidents are proved wrong or forged, the realism of the increasing fear can only be seen on the streets. So much so that 49 celebrities were moved to write about it.
“Regrettably ‘Jai Shree Ram’ has become a provocative war-cry today,” the letter said about the rising jingoism
The letter further urged PM Modi to interfere and act to restore the lost secularism. Moreover, Konkona Sensharma, Anurag Kashyap, and 47 other celebrities were more than humble when they quoted that “The name of Ram is sacred to many in the majority community of India… put a stop to the name of Ram being defiled.”
This letter indeed gave voice to the questions that were in every Indian’s mind, but not in their words. It focused on how lynching is a gruesome, inhumane and an intolerable act. And clearly, needs a stricter law. The 49 celebrities have requested the PM to make it an un-bailable offense.
What are your views on the topic? Do you think that there is a hidden political agenda behind the letter? Or was it high time for an appeal to show its face?
Moreover, these 49 celebrities are being backlashed on their whereabouts during other minority attacks. But even if they did not voice the concern then, should they not voice it ever? So, is a broken past an invitation to a broken future?
