Asa Butterfield, better known as Otis of ‘Sex Education’, remembers how he felt when he lost the role of ‘Spiderman’ to Tom Holland.
Back in 2015, three Brit teens- Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, and Charlie Rowe- competed to grab the hottest role in Hollywood- Peter Parker aka ‘Spiderman’. Tom Holland was finally selected to play the Marvel superhero whereas Asa Butterfield went on to carve a successful career outside Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, Butterfield expressed his sadness over losing Spiderman to Tom Holland.

Asa Butterfield reflects on the ‘Spiderman’ audition and losing the role to Tom Holland.
Asa Butterfield was cited by “Deadline” as a frontrunner in the race to grab the role of ‘Spiderman’. But, Tom Holland, who was earlier known for playing Naomi Watts’ son in disaster drama ‘The Impossible’, eventually, got to play Peter Parker and wear the popular ‘Spiderman’ red and black suit.
Now, opening up about missing out on the Spiderman role, Asa Butterfield told Collider, “Every so often there’s a part [that you want] and it’s a script you love and you kind of put your heart and soul into it, and you don’t get it”, He went on to say, “And it is tough and it is sh*t, but I often find that something even better comes out of it at the end. And so in the case of ‘Spiderman’, I did [Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’], because I wouldn’t have been able to do both of those at the same time”.

Tom Holland went on to do five movies with the franchise. ‘SpiderMan: Far From Home’, became the highest-grossing standalone ‘Spiderman’ movies. Many of the fans feel that Tom is the best actor to have played the role of ‘Spiderman’.

Asa, on the other hand, feels that every actor brings a different personality to the role. He could not have done what Tom has done as Peter. But he doesn’t think of losing ‘Spiderman’, anyhow it was the crucial point in his career.
But there’s one thing he has learnt from the experience which is that getting selected for a role is out of an actor’s hand. All you can do is focus on the audition. If your act resonates with the director, you will get the role. You might be performing great in the audition and yet not get selected. The reason is that the vision of the director doesn’t match your thought for the character.
“I think as an actor and going-out for roles, there’s only so much you can do, and everyone’s gonna have a different take on a part and look at a character in different ways, have a different sort of performance, and you kind of have to stick with what you think”.
He further added, “And if that isn’t necessary for the line with what the director and the producers want, then it’s like, there’s nothing you can do about that. You might just not be the right person, and that’s out of your hands. And that’s something I’ve learned, something that I think is great to help me kind of get over it. Because Tom did amazing things with Peter and he had an entirely different portrayal of him and I think it’s worked so well in the universe and in that part, and I don’t think I could do it. So, I think all things work out in the end”.
‘Sex Education’: When Asa Butterfield came out as a rare gem
After losing ‘Spiderman’ to Tom, he went on to do ‘Sex Education’, which is a brilliant comedy of sex manners. Butterfield was acting since the age of seven, but his biggest movie to date was Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’. But it was ‘Sex Education’ that made us see him in a new light, a bright gem that we otherwise thought was a stone. Butterfield received immense praise for his role as Otis in the series.
The show instantly struck the chord with the audiences as well as educated them, as the title promises … He quipped while talking to “The Guardian”, “I think it did a great job of normalising young people’s fears, and quirks, and hang-ups around sex”. He said that he feels more confident talking about sex.
The series is due for season 3. It was supposed to release in January 2021 but the filming of season 3 is pending due to the shutdown. We will have to wait for official confirmation on the release date of ‘Sex Education’ Season 3.
