The film acted as a follow-up to ITV’s Downton Abbey TV series, which the fans have been fond of discussing since its debut in 2010. Lady Rose Aldridge (nee MacClare), played by Lily James, is one of the key characters in Downton Abbey TV series written and created by Julian Fellowes. The youngest daughter of Hugh “Shrimpie” MacClare (Peter Egan) and Susan MacClare (Phoebe Nicholls), the Earl and Countess of Flintshire. She appeared in more than 21 episodes and connected with fans for her modern girl vibes amid the historical settings. Thus, fans were disappointed when they came to know she wouldn’t be returning to the movie.
Why Lily James didn’t appear as Rose in Downton Abbey film?
After the ending of the Downton Abbey TV series in 2015, Lily James enjoyed much popularity thorough the films like Baby Driver, Mamma Mia 2, and Cinderella. When fans came to know of Lily James’ absence from Downton Abbey film, they wondered whether it was her engagement with other movies that kept her away.

However, in an interview with People in July 2018, Lily James revealed the reason behind her absence from the film.
She revealed that her absence had nothing to with the dates, as she would have loved to be part of the film regardless of how busy she was at the time. As explained by her, the reason for her absence had much to do with the need for her character in the story.
When asked if it was due to her busy schedule, she said, “it wasn’t schedules.”
“There was no space for Rose” – revealed James.
Lily James explained on her character “Rose” not being a part of Downton Abbey film, that there was no space in the story for the character.
She said: “My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back.”
Towards the latter part of the series, Rose married Atticus and moved to New York City. Though she returned in the Downton for the finale of the series, that was not permanent.
While explaining how much she wanted to come back for the movie, she added that story didn’t have any such requirements.
She said: “I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie, it can’t be like a Christmas special and it needs to be a focused storyline,” James adds, noting, “There was no space for Rose.”
Indeed, we missed Lady Rose (Lily James) in the movie, but the movie itself, for its all greatness, did make up for her absence.
A Downton Abbey Film sequel with Lady Rose?
Hopes to see Lily James back as Lady Rose in Downton Abbey world are still alive in the lights of a sequel for the film. Yes! A sequel for the film is in the plans, and it was confirmed by the producer of the film, Gareth Neame.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the producer said: “We’re working on what the story is, and when we might be able to make it. But it’s the same as the first time around: we have to try to get everyone back together again. The challenge will be, is everyone available at the same time? Can we make deals with them? That will be the challenge.”
