‘Breaking Bad’ – What is it about?
Produced and created by Vince Gilligan, ‘Breaking Bad’ premiered in January 2008 on AMC. Five seasons and 62 episodes later, the show’s not only going strong even today but is also considered among the top television shows of Hollywood in a long, long time. Filmed and set in Albuquerque in New Mexico, this gritty crime drama follows the story of a Chemistry teacher turned into drug manufacturer and distributor, Walter White. During the initial hours of the first season, Walter White seems to be a timid man pushed over by his family, friends, students, and employers. He is underpaid and is struggling to stand up to his unfair fate professionally, socially, and financially.

The final blow for White becomes his positive diagnosis of lung cancer in an advanced stage. Troubled by the thoughts of providing financial security to his family after his death, Walter White turns to his former student Jesse Pinkman, a hippie who illegally consumes and deals with crystal meth. Walter partners up with Pinkman and puts his impeccable knowledge of chemistry to use by creating an almost purest form of meth, which soon becomes the talk of the town. As events follow, Walter and Pinkman find themselves trapped in dangerous situations in the drug underworld.
‘Breaking Bad’ Season 1 received fairly positive reviews while the rest of the seasons made their mark earning the show universal acclaim. With every season, the popularity of the show skyrocketed as ‘Breaking Bad’ went on to bag awards like candies in a shop. The nail-biting plot and the brilliant performance of the actors sure make ‘Breaking Bad’ worth the watch.
Is ‘Breaking Bad’ worth the hype?
Bryan Cranston as Walter White should alone be the reason to stamp ‘Breaking Bad’ as worth the watch. Cranston’s takes the evolution of Walter White from a timid chemistry man to a badass drug criminal to a whole new level. His performance in demonstrating White’s most vulnerable to most dangerous moments is impeccably processed and rendered. Cranston had been critically acclaimed and awarded more than once for his performance as Walter White, and, to say the least, it shouldn’t have been otherwise. If we are talking about Walter White, we cannot leave out Jesse Pinkman. Aaron Paul presents Pinkman as the heart of the show. For many fans, it is Pinkman who directs most of the action of the show’s story with Walter White as its head.
Besides Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston who made ‘Breaking Bad’ what it is, a huge shout out should go to where credit is due. The writers of the show have done a brilliant job with the razor-sharp script. The script is coherent, diverse, and extremely well developed. There’s not one dull moment throughout the show’s tenure and all of it is owed to the brilliant twists and cliff-hangers that always left the viewers squirming in their seats, stunned. These reasons and more should be enough to raise the worth of ‘Breaking Bad’, making it a must-watch in every binge-watcher’s watch-list.
