The show was based on Charlaine Harris’s novel series ‘The Southern Vampire Mysteries‘. The series is based around the events that follow after the discovery of “tru blood”, a product that allows dead vampires to come out of their cold graves and interact with humans and live among them. This, however, does not sit right with humans who have hostilities against vampires and they try to quash down the vampire’s struggles to get fair treatment in society. The show lead is a young woman named Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin), a waitress with telepathic abilities, who falls in love with a 173-year-old vampire named Bill Compton (played by Stephen Moyer). ‘True Blood’s’ Sookie is everyone’s absolute favourite, and we can’t wait to see her again soon return in a ‘True Blood’ prequel or ‘True Blood’ special.

What was ‘True Blood’ about?
Although the series had to endure harsh words from the critics during its initial seasons, it all turned around when the show won a Golden Globe award, got some exposure, and built a fan base for itself that remains unrivalled amongst vampire shows. The show enjoys a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Each season of the show follows the corresponding ‘The Southern Vampire Mysteries’ novel with the same number. Following the creation of “Tru Blood”, vampires go from ancient man-killing monsters to fellow citizens overnight in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana.
In the first season, ‘True Blood’s’ Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, meets Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire. Sookie is taken by surprise upon meeting Bill because she cannot read his mind like she can with all the others. Over the course of the season, they become romantically involved. The story goes further as vampires come back from the dead to live in human society and demand equal rights and fair treatment. This, however, does not sit right with certain humans who wish to subjugate vampires (some of them even want to harvest their blood for selfish reasons). The show not only features vampires, but also mythical creatures such as shapeshifters, faeries, etc.
How did the show end?
For the show’s main couple, the series finale was very tragic. A dying Bill explains to Sookie why he, a vampire, and she, a faerie, cannot live happily together and asks of her the kindness for a quick death, to which Sookie unwillingly obliges. Eric and Pam end up happy, in love, and together after Eric recovers from hep-v before the show ends. Jason-Bridgette and Hoyt-Jessica are the other couples that end up together and live happily ever after in the show’s finale.

Why was season 7 the last for ‘True Blood’?
Despite strong per episode viewership stats, HBO decided to cut the cord on its most-viewed show after the seventh season. The reason for the cancellation was most likely on the part of the show’s writers who felt that they had exhausted the stories that they could put on the screen and did not want to stretch the show unnecessarily. Michael Lombardo said, “Every season we would sit down with the creator and say ‘Tell us what next year will be like.’ And if there aren’t exciting, unbelievable, undeniable ideas in the coming season, we’re questioning. And I think in the case of ‘True Blood’, it just felt like we had reached a place where the storytelling was hitting a wall. And to stay just because the ratings were strong felt not who we are and we needed, quite honestly, the money and Sunday night space for some new shows”. The show ended up relinquishing its Sunday night timeslot for ‘Game of Thrones’.
