Sookie Stackhouse’s crazy vampire world adventures came to an end in the horrendous season seven finale of HBO’s ‘True Blood’. If the network could give the show an alternative ending, fans could finally overlook that unforgivable finale!
HBO’s ‘True Blood’ has been a wild ride from the beginning. And regardless of its inconsistencies, the series paved the way for those that came after and took the supernatural genre by storm. ‘True Blood’, a fantasy, horror, drama series, was based on the novels of Charlaine Harris, titled “The Southern Vampire Mysteries”.

‘True Blood’ premiered in the late 2000s, a time during which ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ had manifested a vampire craze. Edward, Jacob, and Bella had reached unreachable levels of fame, with both teens and adults. And then came Elena, Stefan, and Damon, who once again presented a love-triangle, cueing heavy drama and teenage angst.
In many ways, ‘True Blood’ kickstarted a generation of vampire TV shows, even though Buffy had premiered years ago. What made ‘True Blood’ truly special was the showrunners’ ability to make it an endlessly gripping queer show. So even when the last few seasons turned into a chaotic, irreparable mess, fans tried to look past it. Wouldn’t it be an incredible achievement though if HBO decided to give True Blood an alternative finale? Keep reading to see what that could be like!
What is HBO’s ‘True Blood’ about?
‘True Blood’ chronicles the story of Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress living in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The story begins two years after the invention of “Tru Blood”, a synthetic blood product that allows vampires to “come out of the coffin”.
With this product, vampires assure humans that they’re not a threat to them and that they’re safe to be around. The first season follows the vampire community’s struggle for equal rights while anti-vampire organisations gain power. When our protagonist, a telepathic Sookie meets the 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton and is unable to read his mind, she’s intrigued. This hits closer to home than you’d expect because all you can think of is its similarity to ‘Twilight’. But that’s where the similarity ends because ‘True Blood’ kicks the PG-13 rating out the window!
Some storylines however can get really strange and absurd, but you just have to go along with it. You need to pretend that humans and vampires can co-exist. Viewers don’t need any mental gymnastics to watch ‘True Blood’, and should just sit back and enjoy the ride.

What happened in the ‘True Blood’ finale?
Just like every other show that has been stretched to the breaking point, HBO’s ‘True Blood’ had a chaotic final season. It’s definitely one of the most disappointing finales of all time, and it sits right beside ‘Game of Thrones’. When the series had premiered, its campy, horror vibe felt somewhat revolutionary. But the creators had something else in mind (or they had nothing in mind really), to keep the show going.
So, at the end of the series, Bill refuses to take the antidote to heal himself from the Hep-V Virus. Instead, he asks Sookie to give him the “ultimate kindness”, because apparently, he loves her too much to live. Sookie, after much deliberation, obliges but in the most unexpected way, by striking his heart with a stake. Pam and Eric manage to sell the new “Tru Blood” with an antidote, and then there’s a three-year time jump.
Sookie is hosting a Thanksgiving event where she is seen sitting next to a mysterious man, and she’s pregnant. The father is never revealed, and she looks like she’s definitely moved on from her former vampire lover. Everyone is happy, except the viewers, of course, who realise they’ve invested far too much time in ‘True Blood’.
How HBO could give ‘True Blood’ an alternative finale?
HBO’s ‘True Blood’ might be one of our favourite vampire shows of all time, but that finale quite ruined it. There were so many different routes the writers could’ve taken instead of Bill’s unreasonable dying wish. It made absolutely no sense and was unfair to Sookie, and to us, the viewers.
If the network ever decides to give the series a different finale, we have some ideas in mind! We’d love to see a more optimistic Bill who wants to live happily ever after with Sookie. He could take the cure and slowly heal from the virus, instead of giving up his future with her.
Bill could’ve also had a more realistic reason to die, for instance, the unavailability of a cure as opposed to his reason for never being able to give Sookie children. It wasn’t his decision to make, and having children shouldn’t be the only thing that can make a woman happy. He could’ve just died because the cure didn’t get to him in time. There was no reason to employ a sexist perception of what makes a woman happy!
The power to make an alternate ending lies in HBO’s hands, but at least we can hope for it. What would you want to see in an alternate finale of HBO’s ‘True Blood’? Let us know in the comments section below!
