‘The Sopranos’ is building upon its already huge fandom
Created by David Chase, ‘The Sopranos’ was the show that led America into the ‘prestige TV’ era back when it came out in the year 1999. The show went on for 6 seasons and had made itself the ‘Godfather’ of the American TV industry. This American crime drama follows Italian mob boss Tony Soprano as he struggles to maintain a balance between his family and his work of leading a criminal organization. ‘The Sopranos’ demonstrated all the jazz of a perfect crime drama –a riveting plot, power struggle, mob action, and nail-biting drama.
The show’s success could not be limited to the years of its run. HBO brought back ‘The Sopranos’ on TV for a rerun this year and the show picked up more fans for itself. While the existing loyal fans probably watched it for the umpteenth time, the rerun actually saw a groundbreaking spike in viewership. Reports suggest that the show’s viewership has seen a surge as high as 179% and that also includes the Gen Z population. Mic drop!
David Chase was left ecstatic at the show’s reception. He told “Variety”, “It blows my mind. It’s obviously great news. As far as Gen-Z or any other generation, one thing I was always worried about with ‘The Sopranos’ was relevance in reruns, because I thought that the references and stuff would fade away — wouldn’t be there — the products, music or whatever, but I guess it still seems contemporary”.
Everything you need to know about ‘The Sopranos’ prequel
More than a decade later ‘The Sopranos’ still remains an iconic TV show so much so that it’s getting its own film that was supposed to be released this year. The film, ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, is a prequel that was scheduled for release in September 2020. However, the recent global crisis has pushed the release to March 12, 2021.
James Gandolfini played the iconic Tony Soprano in the hit HBO show. Interestingly, the prequel will have Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini, taking up the acclaimed part of his father. Michael told “Deadline”, “It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for ‘The Many Saints of Newark’”.
Chase gave an insight into what the prequel will have in store for the fans. He said, “The movie will deal with the tensions between the blacks and whites at the time, and Tony Soprano will be part of this, but as a kid… I was just interested in the whole Newark riot thing. I started thinking about those events and organized crime, and I just got interested in mixing those two elements”. He added, “The mafia was very polished at that time, how they dressed and what they did. Those traditions were followed more loosely in the series”.
Will there be a reboot for ‘The Sopranos’?
So far, ‘The Sopranos’ has been having a good year with the show being brought back to TV and adding more followers to its cult. The course of events has led the fans to wonder if the series could be rebooted, building upon the timeline of the prequel film. Casey Bloys, HBO’s President of Programming, did not shut the idea down. He told “Deadline”, “I keep saying ‘never say never’. There are no plans, there is no discussions about it, but (Michael) is a really good actor, we had him on ‘The Deuce’. There is nothing on the table at the moment but I will stay open”.
There’s a fair chance that ‘The Sopranos’ might have a reboot. If it doesn’t, we riot! Are you excited for the prequel movie? Let us know in the comments!
