Throughout the eight seasons, some characters died, some transitioned into vampires and werewolves, and some were resurrected back to life. The picturesque town of Mystic Falls was, at all times, crawling with otherworldly creatures, and transpiring a good v/s evil fight. The series is easy to binge-watch because of its eerie yet comforting supernatural setting and themes of high school romance and drama.
For now, it seems like TVD season 8 is the final chapter in the world of vampires, witches, and werewolves. Ian Somerhalder has some exciting ideas about his return to Mystic Falls, but not as the vampire hunk Damon. Keep reading to find out!
Ian Somerhalder is eager to return to Mystic Falls, but not as Damon
The soaring popularity of the supernatural drama series led to two different ‘The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff shows: ‘Originals’ and ‘Legacies’. The former is an ode to the Mikaelsons, the original vampires, and features characters that fans are already familiar with.
The second spinoff series ‘Legacies’ is quite different. The events that take place in the show occur in the aftermath of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ finale. Although Elena and Damon never make an appearance on ‘Legacies’, the show often refers to them and their children. ‘Legacies’ follows the life of Klaus’s daughter Hope, attending Alaric’s boarding school in Mystic Falls.
And when Ian Somerhalder was asked if he could ever see himself returning to the franchise, his answer was positive! While he won’t be returning to the town as the brooding vampire Damon, he certainly has another plan in mind. He told “ET”,
“I actually would love to talk to Jules. I would love to go and direct one of [the ‘Legacies’ episodes]”.
“We spent eight years on the show, and now it’s two years later, which we’re still talking about it while we’re working on other things. That’s a decade, 30 to 40. That’s a very substantial piece of your life. But I would actually love to go back and direct one. I love what they are doing. The show looks amazing, it’s all of my old team”.
It would be amazing for fans to get a chance to see Ian’s vision for ‘Legacies’. He’s been an integral part of TVD for over a decade, and we’d love to see his ideas take shape.
What the TVD team has to say about the future of the franchise
‘The Vampire Diaries’ developed a loyal community of fans, following every bit of its eight seasons, over the years. The show enjoyed a successful long run and received praise, and its finale, albeit devastating, wrapped up the story beautifully. In 2016, Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon, announced that TVD season 8 would be his last. Ian spent eight years portraying one of the two Salvatore brothers, and we’re sure he was looking forward to other projects!
Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec has explained that they considered doing another season, but ultimately decided it was time to wrap it up.
“We all have discussed it and we’ve made the decision that this is it”, Plec said. But she has expressed her wish to see familiar faces make an appearance in ‘Legacies’. And she also hopes that ‘Legacies’, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff will “live on forever”.
In an interview with “Deadline”, Plec said,
“We can have the next generation of Damon and Elena Salvatore’s kids. We can have the Mikaelson daughter of Freya, Keelin, and Vincent. I’m in it for the long haul”.
Luckily, Plec isn’t the only one in it for the long haul. TVD fans are excited to see the series live on with ‘Legacies’, too!
What’s next for Damon aka Ian Somerhalder?
Even if TVD could ever return for a new season, it’s impossible to imagine Mystic Falls without its principal vampire. When Nina Dobrev exited the show following the season 6 finale, fans dearly missed her. No one was excited about seeing the world of Vampire Diaries again without the lead heroine.
But the series was renewed for two new seasons and turned its focus from the long-lived love triangle to the Salvatore brothers. Elena’s absence left a gaping hole, which was fulfilled by Stefan and Damon’s trials and tribulations. Stefan’s character was killed in the TVD season 8 finale, so it’s unlikely that he could ever be resurrected.
Anyway, Ian Somerhalder has moved on from his role in TVD and now stars in the Netflix series ‘V Wars‘. He plays Dr Luther Swann, who enters a world of horror when an ancient disease begins to turn humans into vampires. The actor hasn’t strayed away from his love for the genre because ‘V Wars’ combines sci-fi and vampires. Until there’s any official news about Ian working on the TVD spinoff, we can see him fight the very creatures he once portrayed, in ‘V Wars’!
