Henry Cavill’s choice in opting to follow Superman after ‘The Witcher’ may just not prove to be right, but why?
Henry Cavill has had the chance to play both Superman and Geralt of Rivia in ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘The Witcher’ respectively. But his role in the latter has received better applause than the DCEU films. Though Cavill nails down every role with precision, the problems of the DCEU’s version of Superman were not his fault. Superman was a victim of DCEU’s bad planning. The character was never fully embraced, either the stories were unsaturated or they fell into nonsense, which inevitably affected his performance.
Highlights —
- Henry Cavill is better off with ‘The Witcher’ than Superman.
- Henry Cavill’s Superman wasn’t given enough good material.
- The DCEU never embraced a clear direction for his character.
- Superman’s a victim of the DCEU’s bad planning.
But luckily, this didn’t stop Cavill from exploring other roles. His role in Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ has won the audiences’ hearts and they cannot wait to see Henry Cavill in ‘The Witcher’ season 2. The viewers are more welcoming of his portrayal as Geralt of Rivia than Superman, and even the author of the novels, Andrzej Sapkowski, approved of his performance. Does that mean Cavill is better off not being the Superman? Let’s find out!
Cavill is better off with ‘The Witcher’ than Superman.
Though there is a possibility that Henry Cavill might play Superman again in the DCEU films, the truth is that he’s better off with Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’. Here’s why.
1/3
Superman wasn’t given enough good material.
Henry Cavill is an excellent performer who is capable of playing a stoic action hero in ‘The Witcher’ as well as being the Superman in the DCEU movies. He is arguably the best actor to play Superman, but the only problem is that the films don’t really give his character much to do. It is evident from the beginning of the film that Snyder has no interest in continuing Superman’s story but the new version of Batman. For a brilliant actor like Cavill, not receiving proper material to showcase his talent is nothing but disrespect. That’s why we believe he should not follow the DCEU any more!

2/3
DCEU never embraced a clear direction for his character.
Zack Snyder wanted to fit Superman’s character into the modern-day. And that’s okay! Because there is nothing wrong in re-contextualizing the characters and contemporizing them for the modern-day, but these changes must take place within the established framework of who that character is. Instead of striking the same tone as the previous Superman films, Snyder put Henry Cavill’s character on a darker arc, giving us yet another reason to love him in ‘The Witcher’ than as Superman.
3/3
Superman’s a victim of the DCEU’s bad planning.
With Snyder stepping down from the Superman project due to a family tragedy, Warner Bros brought Joss Whedon, the Avengers director, to finish the project. This lead to a dramatic change of tone and various sub-plots, making Superman’s character from ‘Man of Steel’ to ‘Justice League’ feeling broken and disjointed. Blame it on bad timing or bad direction, but Henry Cavill’s Superman was sidelined in the DCEU, unlike his clearer and more stable future in ‘The Witcher’.
Of course, an actor’s talent is recognized through his acting skills, but it also depends on how well the character is written. Henry Cavill has proved his worth and skills in both the roles – Superman in the DCEU movies and the Geralt of Rivia in ‘The Witcher’. But if we talk about the character that is better received and the more welcoming character, it has to be the Geralt of Rivia.
Take a look at this fan art that depicts Cavill facing off with himself, and that his role in ‘The Witcher’ is more powerful than that of Superman’s.
