Is there hope for a season 2 of the Kidman-Grant starrer ‘The Undoing’? Let’s find out more about the future of the record-breaking series.
Created by David E. Kelley, ‘The Undoing’ has made history. It is HBO’s first original series to grow viewership consistently. Its opening episode was watched by a much bigger audience than the ‘Game of Thrones’ premiere in 2011. The finale episode garnered a viewership of around 3 million across all platforms, making it the most-watched HBO original series since the season 2 finale of ‘Kelley and Kidman’ and ‘Big Little Lies‘. The show ranked as HBO Max’s most-watched series followed by new Max original, Kaley Cuoco’s ‘The Flight Attendant‘.

‘The Undoing’ Season 2
‘The Undoing’ is based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s book, “You Should Have Known”. Though it does not entirely follow the book.
Writer David E. Kelley spoke to “The New York Times” about pushing the ending of ‘The Undoing’ to another season. He admitted that both Susanne Bier and he loved the part of the book where Grace was rebuilding herself after her world fell apart. But for the purposes of this run, he felt it was more about the thriller aspect. Kelley added if they do extend the life of Grace Fraser beyond this season of ‘The Undoing’, maybe they would get into that reconstruction part.

Director of the series, Susanne Bier, also talked about season 2 of ‘The Undoing’ to “Oprah Magazine“.
“Of course, you wonder what comes after this is over. We did joke about it on set. I won’t rule it out. But it’s not in the concrete works”.
Recently Nicole Kidman, who played the role of Grace Fraser, shared a post on her Instagram page. She posted pictures of herself with the cats of ‘The Undoing’. However, what has gotten fans talking about is when Kidman wrote: “Greatly looking forward to working with all of [them] again.” This could either mean she is talking about other hopeful projects in the future or a possible season 2 of ‘The Undoing’.
Though one thing that should be kept in mind is that another David E Kelley series, ‘Big Little Lies’, was a limited series. However, after its huge success, ‘Big Little Lies’ launched a season 2. Another thing to keep in mind is that ‘Big Little Lies’ was also based on a single book and if Kidman’s wish gets true, it might get a season 3.
Noma Dumezweni, who plays attorney Haley Fitzgerald, also feels that the series successfully manages to cover the entire story.
However, if season 2 of ‘The Undoing’ happens, they could reveal more about Jonathan and Elena Alves’ affair. As told to “BAZAAR.com“, Matilda De Angelis, who plays Elena Alves, said she would be interested to reprise her role for some more flashback scenes.
Viewership also plays a huge role in deciding whether a series would be renewed or not. As for now, Jonathan is in jail and Grace and Henry are on their way to New York.
‘The Undoing’ ending explained
‘The Undoing’ finally came to an end on 29th November and revealed Elena Alves’s killer, who, all this while, was right in front of our eyes. The murderer was Grace’s husband, Jonathan Fraser. Though most of the episodes tried convincing that Grace or Grace’s kid Henry killed Elena, the audience knew it had to be Jonathan.
Jonathan met Elena when he was treating her son for cancer. They ended up having an affair with each other. So, why did Jonathan kill Elena? Elena suggested to Jonathan about bonding with Grace and his kid. The thought of his illegitimate affair going public worried Jonathan about his image and set off a rage inside him. Jonathan killed her by repeatedly bashing her head with a hammer. Strangely, he showed no remorse after killing her. That could only mean that his reputation meant more to him than Elena’s life.
Later in the series, Grace learned another shocking information from Jonathan’s mother. When Jonathan was 14 years old, his four-year older sister died due to his fault. Jonathan shockingly displayed no grief or emotion. Grace, a trained psychologist, later realizes that her husband may have a narcissistic personality disorder.
