Good Omens has received massive fan support throughout its first season. Is the British miniseries returning with a season 2?
The 2019 Prime Original miniseries, ‘Good Omens’ is based on a comic novel of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The British supernatural show opened to rave reviews from critics for its performances and visual effects.

It became a sensation due to its unique plot, thought-out costumes, ensemble star cast and its satirical treatment of the concepts of good and evil. The miniseries also ran into a bit of trouble with religious groups who were not impressed with the series’ content. Despite its average viewership in Britain and controversies, will the series be renewed for a season 2?
The good, the bad and the ominous…
A joint production of Amazon Prime video and BBC Studios, Good Omens is a supernatural apocalyptic series featuring Michael Sheen as angel Aziraphale with David Tennant as demon Crowley, who are the respective representatives of heaven and hell on earth and close friends. The series follows them as they try to prevent the upcoming showdown between heaven and hell.
With an ensemble star cast consisting of Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Adria Arjona, Miranda Richardson, Jon Hamm, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, and Frances McDormand (as God’s voice), this Neil Gaiman creation contains six episodes of 50+ minutes each.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critical consensus of the show says, “A smörgåsbord of heavenly imagery and irreverent hilarity, Good Omens works thanks to Michael Sheen and David Tennant’s very-nearly-holy (or maybe unholy?) chemistry – though, at only six episodes long, it’s a rare adaptation that may have benefited from being a little less faithful to the good book.”

Tumblr has called the series the top television show of 2019.
When Good Omens became a cause célèbre
Despite being a comedy series, not everyone has been able to digest its humour. There was a controversy involving the show in 2019 as a Christian organization petitioned for the cancellation of the show. They initially made the mistake of writing the petition to Netflix not knowing that the show was a Prime Video production, but eventually rectified this error.

They have regarded the series as “blasphemous” and said, “This series presents devils and Satanists as normal and even good, where they merely have a different way of being,” the petition reads, arguing the series, inspired by the 1990 novel penned by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, “mocks God’s wisdom” by having God voiced by a woman (Frances McDormand) and for portraying the Antichrist “as a normal kid that has special powers and a mission to destroy the world which he doesn’t really want to do.”
The petition insists that Amazon should stop making ‘evil-promoting content’ and has already been signed 20,000 times.
Prime Video took to its Twitter handle to jestingly respond to the religious group’s goof-up.
Is Good Omens coming back for a season 2?
The makers are positively viewing the idea of developing a second season of the show. Show-runner Gaiman was quoted in an interview saying, “I think the probability [of making more Good Omens] is pretty good. It’s not like anybody doesn’t want to make more Good Omens. We just need to figure out how and when and all of the various ifs, and sort everything out. Plus, we’re in COVID world right now where nobody even knows how to shoot big drama.”
He further said, “There are problems that none of us quite know how to solve. But we’d all love to do it, so it’s really just a matter of seeing if we can actually make that happen in the world, if we can make the time happen, if we can work it with everybody’s schedule. I know I’m not the only person who wants to see more Crowley and Aziraphale.”
The biggest hurdle right now is how to continue the story because season 1 was based on the entire book. It basically sees Crowley and Aziraphale get a happily ever after and so the plot for the next season will need fresh content which may take time. The religious controversy doesn’t really seem to be factor involved anymore considering Prime Video’s facetious response to it.
With the audience loving the chemistry between the two leads and people going as far to say that they are the best new duo on television, the likelihood of the series coming back is indeed strong.
