Has ‘Fringe’ been renewed for season 6?
The five seasons of ‘Fringe’ earned great praise from the audience and critical acclaim as well. Despite its popularity, ‘Fringe’ was not renewed for season 6. The reason behind the cancellation of season 6 was the decreasing ratings and a steep production budget. The first season of ‘Fringe’ earned high ratings but later started decreasing. Till the time ‘Fringe’ reached its third season, the ratings had decreased by half. However, it did not mean that ‘Fringe’s’ popularity had gone down. During the time of its airing, the majority of its viewers watched the episodes of ‘Fringe’ on a DVR or recorded it for later viewing. Streaming and on-demand was still an unknown concept, and live viewership remained the key factor.
During an interview with “Collider”, Fox’s then-president, Kevin Reilly spoke about how ‘Fringe’ had been encountering a significant loss.
“It is an expensive show. We lose a lot of money on the show. At that rating, on that night, it is almost impossible for us to make money on it. That has been the case now, over the last season. We are not in the business of losing money. So, we really do have to sit down with that entity as well, and figure out if there is a number at which it makes sense, or will this be it? I do not want to drop the ball, in the end, and let the fans down”.
The creative team of ‘Fringe’ were often talking about concerns for the show getting an abrupt ending. Much to people’s delight, ‘Fringe’ was renewed for a fifth season that provided a fitting ending to the show. It was possible only because ‘Fringe’s’ rating had reached a consistent viewership. With a renewal for thirteen more episodes, ‘Fringe’ Season 5 also crossed the hundred-episode mark. It benefitted Fox, as it reruns of the show in the future.
A ‘Fringe’ reboot or a season 6 revival?
In an interview with “Collider”, the executive producer of ‘Fringe’, Akiva Goldsman talked about a ‘Fringe’ reboot or a season 6 revival with co-creator J.J. Abrams, and executive producer Jeff Pinknerin in the future. However, he mentioned that they also talked with Warner Bros., but did not find a way through it. Goldman also added that a ‘Fringe’ reboot would only be possible with Pinkner, as the former showrunner is the heart of the series. He further praised him for his writing capabilities. Pinkner was involved with ‘Fringe’ from season 2 to season 4.

It is definitely a season of reboots. Hence, a possible reboot of ‘Fringe’ will surely make fans more than happy. Also, keep in mind that the cast of ‘Fringe’ has moved forward in their respective careers since its season 5 ending.
