Monday brought with it news that Delhi women can use
The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, announced that plans are being made for providing free rides to female commuters in Delhi. And DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) and DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) would fall under this plan.
What is your opinion on free DMRC rides for women?
This decision, though a relief at first, raises a lot of questions on how it will be implemented.
Moreover, it is being claimed that this subsidy is going to cost Rs 700 crore to the Delhi government.
The question arises- How will DMRC differentiate and provide the subsidy to its female riders only? At present, DMRC claims that it has data of its daily commuters, but there is no categorization of these commuters into male or female.
All around, there are questions being raised on Arvind Kejriwal previous denials of any say in the decision in DMRC fares. What was the reason? The rail corporation is a 50-50 ownership of central and state government.
So, it is the biggest question of the hour – How would Arvind Kejriwal be able to take this decision on his own. And implement it too!
What’s more, Arvind Kejriwal has quoted that this plan is being put into momentum for “the safety of women” while the two topics seem to have no connection whatsoever.
Well, whatever be the reasons or the questions; if implemented, it would undoubtedly be a relief for the Delhi women under the piping hot Delhi sun.
