The world is in the grip of the global pandemic and the police have been at the forefront of dealing with the crisis. Let’s find out how 9-1-1 will show the two faces of cops in the upcoming season.
When is season 4 of 9-1-1 airing?
9-1-1 aired its third season finale on May 11, reuniting fire-fighter Buck (Oliver Stark) and his ex, former 911 Operator Abby (Connie Britton) in an emotional reunion.
The show has been renewed for a fourth season, and the good news is that show-runner Tim Minear has opened a virtual writers’ room to carry forward with the work. But there’s no telling when the TV industry will be allowed to resume productions.
The Fox network has pre-emptively announced that new episodes of 9-1-1 will not return until the start of 2021. Though the show-runner hasn’t started writing, yet he has teased us with occasional reference to the pandemic. The show might also show the importance of cops’ reforms, especially in the post-George Floyd era.
Emmy categories for 9-1-1
9-1-1 is the biggest contender for an Emmy on the Fox network, so the network leaving no stone unturned to advertise and keep it in news.
The police procedural drama is featuring in 6 categories as follows:
- Drama Series
- Drama Actor – Peter Krause
- Drama Actress – Angela Bassett
- Drama Supporting Actor – Kenneth Choi, Rockmund Dunbar, Ryan Guzman, Oliver Stark
- Drama Supporting Actress – Jennifer Love Hewitt, Aisha Hinds
- Drama Guest Actress – Connie Britton
Will 9-1-1 become the flag-bearer of police reforms?
Many police-related shows have come under fire in the light of the current crisis after George Floyd’s killing. Two series, Live PD and the Paramount Network’s Cops — have already been pulled off air. The social reality we live in doesn’t match the media texts that we watch,” said DePaul University media professor, Paul Booth.
Most cop shows are criticised for not dealing significantly with issues of racial supremacy in policing. “Very few of them [TV series] deal with police brutality, and if they do, it’s either like a very special episode, or the cops are the protagonists and we still uphold them and we still trust them,” said Paul.
These shows make stereotypes for the innocent masses. With the fourth season of 9-1-1, Fox is trying to become the flag bearer of police reforms on TV. Who knows, it might take pride in showing the real side of policing. The chances are bleak, though. It would be foolish of us to expect “The Wire” on 9-1-1 season 4.
Time jump on the fourth season
Another major theme which completely suits 9-1-1 is the global pandemic. Tim Minear is planning to include the pandemic into the plot of season 4. He has teased a time jump on season 4 of 9-1-1 to match with the global pandemic timeline.
Minear told TVLine, “I feel like you have to address it. I haven’t broken a single episode, but my feeling – and I reserve the right to completely change my mind – is that on a first responder show like this, you can’t ignore it.”
He said the new season will leap so that the characters on the screen would have gone through the same issues as the audiences.
Tim further added, “There may be flashbacks that will show what our people went through at the height of the [pandemic], but by the time we resume physical production, that means the world will have figured out how to start opening for business again.”
On being asked about the background theme of 9-1-1 season 4, he said,
“Maybe our role is to demonstrate through our little fantasy show that life will go on. So, yes, it will exist in our universe — and life will continue.”
