Let’s revisit Stars Hollow and New Haven to decide who the worst Gilmore Girl is. Emily or Rory? Rory’s character has recently attracted a lot of hatred from fans on accounts of being selfish and inconsiderate, but Emily is also part of the race. Let’s see who is the worse of the two.
You’re a ‘Gilmore Girls’ fan. We’re ‘Gilmore Girls’ fans. Everyone on the internet is a ‘Gilmore Girls’ fan. And all of us can agree that Lorelai’s character, in comparison to her daughter Rory and mother Emily, is unparalleled. She’s compassionate, strong, loveable, an entity of outpouring excitement, and fiercely believes in her principles.

- Emily and Rory – Who is the worst?
Some might fault Lorelai for feeding her daughter junk food and caffeine, but her parenting approach was exemplary. She communicates with her daughter freely, and they often come across as best friends rather than family. But why should there be something wrong with having your mom as your best friend?
While Lorelai is the most popular Gilmore girl, there’s a lot more to say about Rory and Emily. They’ve both been toxic, problematic, disrespectful, and hurt Lorelai in some way or the other. In the first few seasons, Lorelai dives into great detail to elaborate on the relationship she shares with her mother.
Emily is often painted as the antagonist, but she just wants to connect with her daughter and granddaughter. And then there’s Rory who doesn’t have a great record either. But between Emily and Rory, who is the worst?
Which of the Gilmore Girls are you? (Quiz)
Revisiting every questionable Rory Gilmore moment ever
Where do we begin talking about Rory Gilmore? Lorelai’s bookish, intelligent, doe-eyed daughter has some vexing aspects to her personality. Unlike her family, Rory was never really interested in making friends or being a part of social groups. We understand that she’s an introvert and would rather be by her books, but she changes too much too soon.
She drops out of Yale and steals a boat because her boyfriend’s father tells her she wouldn’t make it in journalism. Her overreactions are nonsensical and she ceases to embody the characteristics of the honest, committed girl we see in the first few seasons.
Rory spending the night with Dean when he was already married to someone else was highly inappropriate! Even later, when things get rocky between Dean and his wife, she continues to meddle in his affairs. Rory is quite selfish when it comes to her happiness and has a tendency to disregard the feelings of others.
We haven’t even discussed Rory’s relationships in the revival yet! She’s dating a man she has no interest in and is having an affair with her university boyfriend who’s already engaged. Rory hasn’t learned from her mistakes even 10 years later and is still indifferent towards everyone around her.
Emily Gilmore is also a contender to be the worst ‘Gilmore Girls’ character
While Emily and Rory share a relationship with highs and lows, Emily and Lorelai have an almost estranged one. They don’t see eye to eye on things and Emily usually comes across as an extremely angry woman. If you look closely, you’ll realise that all she wants is to emotionally connect with the other Gilmore girls. She loves her family and has made difficult decisions, but in hindsight, there was always a good heart behind them.
Emily is often nagging those around her and can go to any lengths to get what she wants. But, at the same time, she’s ready to bend her principles for the right reasons. At a DAR function, Emily calls out Shira Huntzberger’s drinking problem, after her husband dissuades Rory from pursuing journalism. Emily is kind to everyone in her social circle, but if anyone discourages her family, she stands up for them.
In the revival, Emily is seen coping with the loss of her husband and becomes independent on her own. Her character development will take every ‘Gilmore Girls’ fan by surprise, a great one at that!
Emily or Rory: Who is the worst?
Most ‘Gilmore Girls’ fans would pick Emily as the worst character, between Emily and Rory. But they fail to realise that Emily’s struggles are bigger and far more important than her granddaughter’s. She’s tough, she’s stubborn, but she genuinely makes an effort to change.
Rory, on the other hand, doesn’t have many redeeming qualities, and the revival went on to prove that. She had a great education, worked hard in school, and had many privileges to ensure a successful career. But she’s not doing much to ensure it, herself.
Rory feels entitled to a prosperous career as a journalist, but we hardly see her writing anything. She’s rarely a good friend to those around her and disrespects other women by having affairs with their boyfriends. Emily certainly was a tough parent to Lorelai but a great pseudo parent to her Rory. She made mistakes, but she also changed for the better. It’s the kind of quality you can never put a price on!
We’ve made up our minds, for us its Rory, but who do you think is the worst ‘Gilmore Girls’ character between Emily and Rory? Let us know in the comments.
