Vince Gilligan feels resentment when fans tell him that Better Call Saul is better than Breaking Bad.
From the day it was premiered, Breaking Bad has remained the greatest fiction show ever made. The ratings on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, comments from critics, and love from fans are the proof of the greatness of the show.
However, recently a show is beginning to challenge the status of Breaking Bad. It’s not hard to guess the show challenging Breaking Bad is Better Call Saul, the show that belongs to the same universe and is created by Vince Gilligan, who also created Breaking Bad.
- Vince Gilligan never thought Better Call Saul will become better than Breaking Bad.
- “That’s never gonna happen” – Vince Gilligan on Better Call Saul turning out to be better than Breaking Bad.
- “I find hard to choose between them” – says Vince Gilligan.
- Vince now loves when fans say Better Call Saul is better than Breaking Bad.
Though both the shows are Gilligan’s achievement, still, Vince Gilligan hated the idea of Better Call Saul turning out to be better than Breaking Bad.
Vince Gilligan never thought Better Call Saul will become better than Breaking Bad.
Is Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad? No, not yet. But the show can achieve the greatness of Breaking Bad and might even surpass it by the time the story reaches its finale. Even though Better Call Saul is still trying to catch up with Breaking Bad, some fans and critics already consider the show superior to Breaking Bad.
No doubt that the legal drama created to serve as a prequel to Breaking Bad, and to explore the backstory of Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) turned out to be a massive success. Better Call Saul is the precise blend of Breaking Bad’s intensity and Saul Goodman’s humour. Still, when Vince Gilligan came up with the idea, he never thought of it achieving the same level of success as Breaking Bad.

How Better Call Saul came into existence is another discussion. But when it was being planned, Vince Gilligan never thought of the success it’s achieving now. What Breaking Bad achieved then, has not been possible for any other show to achieve. Thus, the thought of Better Call Saul becoming better than Breaking Bad was never in Vince’s mind.
Vince Gilligan said, “I never thought anyone would come up to me and say, ‘I like Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad.’ If you had asked me before we started, ‘Would that bother you if someone said that?’ First of all, I would have said, ‘That’s never gonna happen. And yeah, it probably would bother me.’”
“I find hard to choose between them” – says Vince Gilligan.
Both the shows are Vince’s babies. No doubt he gave them birth and nurtured them to become the greatest shows. Even though Breaking Bad was the first one, and still is the best one, Vince admits he can’t choose between both.
He said “I run into people every day now who say Better Call Saul is their favourite of the two. I love hearing that. I don’t know where I fall personally on that scale, that continuum — I try not to choose. I don’t have children, but this is as close as I’ll ever get to having children. I find it hard to choose between them. But I’m just glad they both exist.”

Back in the days, Vince would have never accepted that Better Call Saul could turn out to be better than Breaking Bad for some fans. But now things have changed. Better Call Saul has in-fact come close enough to Breaking Bad that considering it to be better in a few aspects won’t be wrong. With the time, Vince has also accepted the fact, and it doesn’t bother him anymore. “It doesn’t bother me a bit,” Vince said “It tickles me. I love it.”
