The Big Bang Theory references you missed
If you know Young Sheldon, you must already be aware of the obsession over it. Since the show ended in May 2019, we have been hunting for those tiny glimpses and teasers of the TBBT world in Young Sheldon, and it’s not our fault.
The Big Bang Theory has been a crucial part of our life for over 12 years. The show that debuted in September 2007, ran for 12 long seasons. We have almost lived a decade with those characters and the familiar world of The Big Bang Theory. Thus, its hard to move on.
A little glimpse or reference to TBBT in Young Sheldon helps us get through the day.
A glimpse of future friends
Starting with one of the most celebrated The Big Bang Theory reference in Young Sheldon: Raj, Leonard, Howard, Amy, and Penny, played by Kunal Nayyar, Galecki, Simon, Mayim, and Kaley, respectively, in TBBT played a very crucial role in Sheldon Cooper’s (Jim Parsons) life.
Their relationship as friends, as partners, and as a lot of things have brought life to TBBT. However, in their absence at a young age, Sheldon really thought he would be alone throughout his life.
In Young Sheldon season 2 finale, when Dr. Sturgis (Wallace Shawn) got sick, and no one else turned up for Sheldon’s (Iain Armitage) Noble prize-themed party, Sheldon sat sadly thinking if he ever will have friends in his life.
And as to everyone’s surprise, the show takes us on a tour with glimpses of all the young avatars of Sheldon’s friends from TBBT.
Professor Proton’s Easter egg
If you don’t know Professor Proton, you didn’t pay attention to either show. Professor Proton was Sheldon’s TV buddy, his favorite TV scientists from a very young age.
We remember in TBBT, when Sheldon first meets Professor Proton, he reveals that he has one of his signed photos. Adult Sheldon reveals that he received it when he wrote to him as a child.
In Young Sheldon, if you have been paying attention, you will always find that signed Professor Proton photo stuck onto Sheldon’s bedroom wall.
Georgie’s tyre romance
Do you remember Sheldon’s brother, Georgie Cooper’s love for tyres? In season 2 episode 8 of Young Sheldon, we all discover Georgie Cooper Jr.’s (Montana Jordan) talent of finding punctures in tyres miraculously and repairing them.
As he joins his neighbour’s tyre shop, who recognized his talent, it kicks off his career. This Young Sheldon sequence was a direct reference to Georgie’s franchise named Dr. Tyre in The Big Bang Theory.
In season 11, Sheldon even visits the shop where we see his brother and his beloved tyres.
The Caltech reference
California Institute of Technology is very intimate to The Big Bang Theory, and even in Young Sheldon. Fans are waiting for that moment when young Sheldon will finally join Caltech, an institute he always dreamt of joining, and where he ends up working as an adult in TBBT.
However, in the 16th episode of Young Sheldon Season 3, we got some fresh teasing of young Sheldon’s future in the institute. Sheldon is accompanied by his father to Caltech to attend a talk by the little man’s hero Stephen Hawking. Later, while wandering on the campus, Sheldon acknowledges one room.
Sheldon says to his father: “Imagine all the stimulating conversations that go on at these tables.”
George: “I bet.”
Sheldon: “I can see myself going here one day.”
George: “I think you’d fit right in.”
This undoubtedly had been the best The Big Bang Theory reference in Young Sheldon. It was adorable to see Sheldon noticing that room and imagining himself there when we already know he will be there soon in his life.
