In an era of moody prestige drama dominated by male leads, Gilmore Girls was a breath of fresh air that revolved around two witty, well-adjusted women. With snappy dialogues and savvy pop culture references, the show used its warm exteriors to explore class and privilege.
What makes the Gilmore Girls so popular?
Lorelai got pregnant at 16 and left her rich, overbearing parents in order to raise Rory free from their interference. But when the latter’s Ivy League ambitions landed her to an exclusive prep school, Lorelai turned to her imperious dad Richard and her sharp-tongued, Machiavellian mother Emily for help. Their financial aid comes at a price: one family dinner every Friday night, leading to many excruciating passive-aggressive rows over the coq au vin.

When the show returned with Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life on Netflix in 2016, its great moments (particularly the ugly grief dividing Lorelai and Emily following Richard’s death) were equalled by its flawless performances. In addition, the show’s quippy, fast-paced dialogue is very clever throwing a certain charm to the show.
Where does the future lie for Gilmore Girls Season 9
Gilmore Girls Season 9 has been put on the back burner as the creator of the series Amy Sherman-Palladino has signed a multi-year deal with Amazon for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. But here’s the catch, Sherman-Palladino’s contract allows her to work on a second Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix. Considering Rory is pregnant, it could play an interesting story arc for Season 9.
