Let’s rewind our journey on ‘Empire’
The hit Fox series ‘Empire’ ended two episodes earlier than intended after the coronavirus lockdown caused all production to halt.
The last episode, although billed as a series finale, was an amalgam of the Fox drama’s antepenultimate and penultimate hours. The final hour of the series brought together both the Lyon family and its business interests.
It focussed mainly on repairing the tortured, frequently fractured relationship between Lyon patriarch Lucious (Terrence Howard) and matriarch Cookie (Taraji P. Henson). We could not get a happier ending for the Lyon family. Hopefully, there’s more to come in the 2nd part of season 6, or season 7, of ‘Empire’.
At the start of the episode, Lucious and Cookie team up professionally, firing Pamplemousse rivals Kelly Patel (Pej Vahdat) and Giselle Barker (Nicole Ari Parker), in their corporate boardroom, to wrest control of the Lyon music business.

At home, the eldest son, Andre is out of the hospital but still bereft over his separation from his wife and son. He plans to leave for a church mission in South America. Cookie tries but is not able to persuade him to stay.
Then enters youngest Lyon brother Hakeem, who persuades his brother to stay and try to establish a relationship with his young son, emphasizing the finale’s theme: “Family is everything. You’ve got to fight”.
The finale was about Lucious and Cookie realizing their eternal connection. Only Yana senses Lucious’ true feelings, realizing he still loves Cookie and that he won’t be accompanying her abroad: “She has your heart”.
Viewers couldn’t see a father-son reunion, likely due to the shooting schedule cut short, but the suggestion of one is still there.
Why was ‘Empire’ cancelled?
According to “Hollywood Reporter”, the decision to end the series was taken as Fox is now not aligned with any major studio. Former corporate sibling 20th Century Fox TV, which produces ‘Empire’, is now part of Disney. So, Fox doesn’t have any rights on ‘Empire’.

The show also underwent some turmoil with the saga of actor Jussie Smollett, who is still under contract but may not return for the final season after his legal issues caused him to be written out of the end of season five. The series guided him to the exit door.
Charlie Collier, who runs ‘Empire’ on Fox Entertainment, was asked about the possibility of the legally challenged Smollett returning for the final season. He dodged the question and replied, “There’s an option to have Jussie in the series but we have no plans for that”.
These were the reasons why ‘Empire’ had to end its reign on Fox TV. But, all this was true before the pandemic hit the entertainment world. ‘Empire’ had to wrap up 2 episodes before the guns-a-blazing planned finale.
‘Empire’ will return guns-a-blazing- season 6 or season 7?
Collier told “Deadline” in a 2019 interview, “We are turning the final season into a large TV event — we are trying to go out guns a-blazing. You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve”.
Then coronavirus threw water on the highly awaited finale. Lee Daniels expressed his disappointment on the early finale but offered a bit of hope for the show’s fans, saying, “I think there’s more to do with these characters, and I’m heartbroken we aren’t getting to shoot the finale we wanted — at least not yet. But you know what they say on television? Stay tuned! To the ‘Empire’!”
This statement by the co-creator leaves the door open for another season or at least a return with the second segment of the sixth season. We sign off on the hope that ‘Empire’ comes back to bid the FINAL goodbye again.
