Downton Abbey next movie set in history just to fit in Mathew Crawley
The death of Mathew Crawley (Dan Stevens) in Downton Abbey was the most heart-wrenching moment for fans. Fans complained that they hadn’t had enough of Mathew and wanted him back in the drama, even if that required turning the wheel backwards.

Julian Fellowes is well known to serve what the audiences want in their plate. Keeping up with the tradition, he is bringing back Dan Stevens to don the cap of Mathew Crawley, once again. To make this happen, Julian has to depart from the format of the Downton Abbey series and take it back in history.
Fans were left disappointed when Dan Stevens betrayed them by not appearing in the first Downton movie. Stevens gave a glimmer of hope when he shared a photo of himself alongside Downton co-stars Michelle Dockery and Allen Leech on Instagram with the cheeky caption: “Should Matthew have a moustache for the #DowntonAbbeyMovie … ? What looked like a dream coming true was put to dust when the Downton movie released without Mathew Crawley aka Dan Stevens.
This time Julian Fellowes is betting on Dan Stevens to make the next Downton Abbey movie project a blockbuster. The core Downton team is keeping somewhat mum on details about the upcoming film but reports have it that Julian is taking an about turn into history to fit in the fan-favourite Mathew Crawley anyhow.

We could have been satisfied even with his cameo in a flashback but Dan Stevens will play a significant part in the upcoming movie in the Downton franchise.
Why the hoopla around Mathew Crawley aka Dan Stevens?
Mathew Crawley died in a car accident shortly after Mary gave birth to their first child in the third season. It has been 7 years and fans haven’t gotten over the loss.
Twitter is still flooded with his fans expressing their grief.
“7 years later and I’m still not over Matthew Crawley’s death”, tweeted one fan.
“It’s almost 2020 and I’m still not over Matthew Crawley dying in Downton Abbey”, echoed another.
“Not sure I’ll ever be able to forgive the writers of @DowntonAbbey for the death of Matthew Crawley. That and the passing of Lady Cybil have left indelible emotional scars…” one shared on Twitter.
Dan Stevens is the only person who was ready to move on and say goodbye to his character. Shortly after his onscreen demise, he told the Telegraph,
“From a personal point of view, I wanted a chance to do other things. It is a very monopolizing job. So there is a strange sense of liberation at the same time as great sadness because I am very, very fond of the show and always will be”.
Release date updates of the next Downton Abbey movie
Julian Fellowes is keeping everything under wraps regarding the detail of his next Downton movie. He hasn’t officially announced the next movie yet but reports have it that he has started working on the timeline and significant historic events to fit in Mathew Crawley in the Downton Abbey estate.
There are no official release dates yet but it is easy to predict that the movie wouldn’t release soon because show makers meticulously work on every single detail on the set, and a good thing requires a good amount of time.
We will have to wait to see Dan Stevens playing Mathew once again. Until that happens, you can always binge-watch the re-runs and don’t forget to mention in the comments box how much you miss Mathew Crawley aka Dan Stevens in Downton Abbey.
