‘Downton Abbey’ Season 7: The hope lives on
Old days are nowadays seen in a different light due to the extravagant period drama ‘Downton Abbey’.
The last time when we met the Crawley family, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), the Countess of Grantham, fondly said, “Just like the old days”, and one couldn’t resist getting mesmerized with the show’s extravaganza.
In the ‘Downton Abbey’ movie that we watched, the Crawley clan’s story picked up in 1927, shortly after the TV’s finale. The Crawleys were frantically reading for a lavish dinner. And why not, the royal visit had to be dramatic. In between the hubbub, we saw the same old Lady Cora and Lady Mary but noticed slight differences in their attitudes. They confirmed that the times are different now.
The last scene took us to a clandestine gay club where a rowdy group of men was deliriously dancing to the song “Black Bottom”. It was the most surprising scene in the movie because the north of England in the 1920s was hardly a gay haven.
‘Downton Abbey’s’ end clearly ignited the hopes that the show would be back for another season and will slowly pull the Crawley’s into the modern era.

Following this pattern, the new project of ‘Downton Abbey’ will revive old sweet aristocratic days, but will also surprise the Crawley’s with new revolutions and challenges. If we follow the pattern of upcoming historic events in British history, a movie would be too short to exhibit the whole story of the times. Season 7 of ‘Downton Abbey’ would be a perfect idea for Julian Fellowes to rebound after ‘Belgravia’s’ debacle.
Julian Fellowes might raise the costume budget
Julian Fellowes is aware of the fact that the costume is the show’s strength. There’s no denying the fact that the script is great, but it was the grandeur of sets and costumes that have always mesmerized the fans. Some of the critics even commented that ‘Downton Abbey’ has just been a costume drama and a shallow depiction of history.
Julian is widely known for not missing any detail in the costumes. Recently, he has learned hard lessons from the failure of ‘Belgravia’. ‘Belgravia’ was touted to be the new ‘Downton Abbey’ but the show disappointed everyone from the critics to the fans. Julian, after the failure, will not leave any loophole and will intend to win over the disappointed fans once again.
Julian would not downplay costumes as he did in ‘Belgravia’. People love the show for its grandeur and costumes. Ignoring that might be an expensive mistake if he does it again after ‘Belgravia’.
