Harvey’s personal struggles with commitment subdue his feelings
Since the first season of Suits, it’s been quite clear that Harvey and Donna are more than just friends. Even if that’s what they’d like you to believe, their actions say otherwise. Their flirtatious banter, electric chemistry and ability to finish each other’s sentences greenlight a potential love story.
But their relationship is complicated. In the later seasons, the show reveals that Harvey and Donna had previously spent a night together. But they decided to keep their friendship alive instead and continue working together and forget about what happened.

Even though he secretly has feelings for her, Harvey never lets them take precedence over what he thinks is best. He faces issues with trust and commitment, which is why he resorts to hook-ups and is committed to his career.
Harvey disguises his fears and never recognises that his commitment issues stem from his childhood. The infidelity dynamic between his parents has instilled a fear of commitment, so he never settles down with a woman.
Harvey is afraid of losing Donna’s friendship
Donna is more than just Harvey’s legal secretary. She’s his friend, his confidante, she knows and understands him better than anyone in his life. Mike Ross might be Harvey’s best friend, but even he doesn’t know him like Donna does. She is empathetic and fiercely protective of him, and has his back no matter what comes their way.
Harvey loves and respects their friendship just as much as Donna does, and recognises her importance in his life. She’s one of the reasons for his success and it’s pretty obvious that he is attracted to her. Harvey completely relies on her but he can’t afford to get too close and lose her in the process.
Harvey and Donna have a push-pull dynamic between them, but deep down somewhere, he knows that he loves her. She knows full-well that he can’t commit to her because of his emotional block from the past but yearns for him anyway. Theirs was an epic love story that was meant to get its happy ending, especially after years of waiting.
Was their happily-ever-after just another ploy to appease fans?
It’s hard to imagine that their romance is just a ploy to give fans what they’ve been longing for. Through eight seasons, Suits has continued to tease Harvey and Donna fans which has surely been a laborious task. Fans are crazy about their relationship and have waited in anticipation since the first season to watch them get together.
‘Suits’ hinted at their happy ending early on, but they had to stumble through other relationships before finding each other. The only difference is that of Harvey and Donna’s perspectives, she’s always been sure of it, and he hasn’t been. But here is what’s common between them – they both hold an irreplaceable place in each other’s lives.
The show finally brought the slow burn romance of Donna and Harvey to life with their wedding in season 9. It wasn’t an unnecessary ploy to appease fans, but the happy ending their characters deserved. We wish there was another season so we too could be a part of their happily ever after.
