The legacy of ‘The Sopranos’
‘The Sopranos’ is an American crime drama series that aired from 1999-2007. The television show revolves around Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), a New Jersey-based mobster who deals with the difficulties of balancing his family life while continuing to be the leader of a criminal operation.
Regarded as being one of the best television shows ever made, the life and (possible) death of Tony Sopranos and the people around him is what kept the viewers intrigued throughout the show’s run. Fans of the show are always cock-a-hoop whilst sharing how much they love ‘The Sopranos’.
“I started rewatching ‘The Sopranos’ last night. It’s been a good 9 or 10 years since I’ve watched the show. Damn it’s still so good”, wrote @ChadHastyRadio on Twitter.
Another fan tweet read, “All these TV shows and ‘The Sopranos’ is still the best one ever”.
‘The Many Saints of Newark’ that inspired it all
Following the end of ‘The Sopranos’, viewers were thrown for a loop and left wondering if there would ever be a revival or reboot to clarify the cliffhanger.
However, showrunner David Chase confirmed that the possibility of the new instalment was quite unlikely. But it wasn’t until 2018 that New Line Cinemas announced that it purchased the rights to produce a prequel film, along with HBO Films, with Chase co-writing the screenplay alongside Lawrence Konner.
‘The Many Saints of Newark’ centres on the 1967 Newark riots and racial tensions between the Italian-American and African-American communities; while also highlighting the life of Tony Soprano.
While casting for numerous roles for the prequel, it didn’t take too long for the showrunners to cast Michael Gandolfini, the OG James Gandolfini’s son, as young Tony Soprano. The movie might not have released yet, but it has already created a fantastic buzz on social media that is also hinting at a possible series dedicated to the life of young Tony.
“#sopranos someone needs to do another series of sopranos with a young Tony Soprano and his dysfunctional family”, expressed a fan on Twitter.
“Can’t wait for the new series. Tony Soprano as a young man. James Gandolfini’s real-life son is gonna play him”, said another fan.
Is there a release date for the rumoured new series yet?
While the release date of the rumoured new series is unknown, the prequel film ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ will be available to watch in 2021.
The movie was originally supposed to release in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all productions have been stalled, because of which release dates of numerous shows and movies have been postponed.
