Jax Teller’s complicated life as a part unapologetic bad boy and part biker gang president is wonderfully woven into the series.
After seven incredibly successful seasons, FX drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’ ended in 2014 and, even years later, fans can’t stop thinking about it. The action crime drama series was created by Kurt Sutter and starred Charlie Hunnam as Jackson “Jax” Teller in the lead. Dubbed “Hamlet on motorcycles”, the series was conceptually inspired by the Shakespearean play which means every important character would die by the end. It delivered great performances and a storyline viewers couldn’t get enough of, but the big doses of gruesome violence made it difficult to watch.

It’s essentially a show about SAMCRO, Charming, California’s outlaw biker gang of which Jax was the president. After Jax discovers a manifesto written by his father John, the former president, he begins to question the club, his relationships, and himself. When a series chronicles the life of the president of a biker gang, you can only expect there to be violence. The theme of the tragedy was consistent through the seasons and all the way to the finale when Jax killed himself.
Why Jax killed his mother Gemma
One of the most shocking ‘Sons of Anarchy’ moments unravelled when Jax Teller killed his mother Gemma. Viewers were surprised because it had just begun to seem as if they were getting along! Unfortunately, Gemma’s lack of judgment caused her to brutally murder her daughter-in-law Tara, a shocking incident that received the perfect response from Jack. In an emotionally charged episode, Jack is seen tracking down his mother before murdering her with a gunshot to the head.
For the longest time, ‘Sons of Anarchy’ fans wondered whether it was necessary for Tara and Gemma to die. Since the series is based on Hamlet, it was only expected from the beginning. First, Opie’s death hardened Jax, Tara’s shocked him to his core, and after killing his own mother, Jax pushed himself further than he had been before.
The real reason why Jax killed himself in the series finale
The lead character’s death came as a shock to fans who least expected it, but Jax’s death was written from the beginning! After he killed Gemma, he knew he couldn’t move forward from the crime and if he stayed alive, his boys would meet the same fate. The deaths of Opie, Tara, and Gemma pushed Jax in an abyss where the only life he could ever live was a tormenting one. He had lost his rationality but still chose to give his children a different life with his ex-wife Wendy.
Jax committed suicide because of the grief he felt, being responsible for so much death around him. Jax’s death wasn’t just the end of his character, it was about ending the association his family had with the biker gang. He didn’t want his sons to follow in his path, so the madness had to end with him.
The most important ‘Sons of Anarchy’ death
The total number of deaths on the show tally over 170, but if we were to count the most impactful ones, there have been four. The series has never shied away from featuring brutal deaths, especially Opie Winston, Tara Knowles, Gemma Teller, and Jax Teller. Opie’s wife was murdered in an attempt on his own life which left him to raise his children on his own. He was Jax’s best friend who met his untimely demise in season 5, after a fatal blow to his head. Jax’s wife Tara was assaulted and stabbed in the head with a barbecue skewer by her mother-in-law Gemma. All that happened while Tara was pregnant, which was all the more devastating.
One of television’s toughest personalities, Gemma, would do anything if it meant her family would be safe. She had a hand in every crime that took place on the series, but she took it a bit too far by ambushing Tara and murdering her. Her life ended when her son deposited a well-deserved bullet in her head, and viewers had never envisioned that a character that important could be killed. Last but not the least, Jax Teller’s mortifying suicide in the season finale still haunts ‘Sons of Anarchy’ fans. He lived on his own terms, died on his own terms, and yet received a fond farewell, even if it was unexpected.
