The Crown to score big with Princess Diana’s costumes
The Crown is well-known when it comes to costumes. They have already done it with Jacky Kennedy. This time, they are doing it on an even bigger scale with, of course, Princess Diana. A lot of thought goes, in general, into designing and sewing the historic costumes on the show.
The idea behind Jackie Kennedy’s outfit was simple, modern aesthetic that she exuded as the First Lady. While the Queen picked a gaudy, traditional outfit on her meeting with the Kennedys, Jackie wowed. The multitude of ruffles and folds on the Queen’s dress hearken back to a much more traditional fashion sense, not to mention the overabundance of frills.
In the latest teaser of The Crown season, four fans have seen Emma Corrin, while playing Princess Diana, walking down the aisle in her famous gown. Few seconds into her appearance in the teaser has made us excited for more.
Not just The Crown, most historical dramas pay attention to dressing their characters. But a period drama has to adhere to reality while designing the costumes and they have fewer liberties as compared to something like Game of Thrones.
But that doesn’t mean that the team doesn’t get to show off their talent. The costume team saw an opportunity play in the daily life scenes, which are not recorded. Its scenes like this that allows them to be storytellers and not historians.
In a show like The Crown, costumes bring out the inner thoughts and minute details of a character’s personality. It sets a narrative. This time, The Crown will go a notch higher because Princess Diana is making her debut. Sources even reveal that the famous rivalry between Diana and Camilla will be exhibited through their costumes.
Season 4 surprise: Diana versus Camilla
Princess Diana rocked when she made the shocking statement to BBC’s Martin Bashir that there were “three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded”. While Charles and Diana battled during their marriage, she had a grudge against the woman who drove a wedge into the relationship with her husband.
While most of the dresses that the late princess wore became a sensation, the same is not the case with Camilla. So, the costume team of The Crown will take liberties in dressing Camilla (played by Emerald Fennel), especially during her intimate moments with Prince Charles. Various famous looks on Diana will be copied, but the designers say that they are trying to leave a bit of them in the costumes.
Diana was fondly called the People’s Princess. Shooting one such moment, Emma Corrin was photographed wearing a stunning re-creation of a gold-embroidered, pearl-embellished Victor Edelstein gown and a bolero jacket that the late Princess wore when attending a Welsh National Opera Gala production of “Falstaff” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
While Diana became a public eye candy with her choice of dresses, Camila carved a place in the heart of Prince Charles.
While season 4 of The Crown will focus on new PM Margaret Thatcher’s (Gillian Anderson) storyline, Diana versus Camila will be a surprise element in the plot. Their costumes will speak for their unsaid hatred for each other.
