‘The Crown’s’ journey in costumes
‘The Crown’ has always been a serious player when it comes to costumes. Most historical dramas pay attention to dressing their characters but ‘The Crown’ is a step higher in providing fascinating details with their costumes.
A period drama like ‘The Crown’ has to adhere to reality in designing the costumes and they have fewer liberties as compared to shows like ‘Game of Thrones’. But this doesn’t mean that the team doesn’t get to show off their talent. The costume team sees an opportunity to play with the daily life scenes which are not recorded. Scenes like these allow them to be storytellers insteadof historians.

A lot of thought goes in designing and sewing the historic costumes. For instance, the idea behind Jackie Kennedy’s outfit was to speak of a simple modern aesthetic that Jackie exuded as the first lady. While the Queen picked the gaudy, traditional outfit on her meeting with the Kennedys’. The multitude of ruffles and folds on the dress hearken back to a much more traditional fashion sense, not to mention the overabundance of frills.
In a show like ‘The Crown’, costumes bring out the inner thoughts and minute details of a character’s personality. Costumes set a narrative. This time, ‘The Crown’ will go a notch higher because, of course, Princess Diana is making her debut in the upcoming season 4. Sources say that their rivalry will be exhibited through their costumes.

‘The Crown’ Season 4 set for Diana versus Camilla through competing costumes
Princess Diana rocked the world when she made the shocking statement to BBC’s Martin Bashir that there were “three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded”. While Charles and Diana battled during their marriage, Diana had her own grudge against the woman who drove a wedge into the relationship with her husband.
Diana made it clear that she was no longer interested in public civility at Camilla’s 40th birthday party. Instead of the traditional “kiss hello”, Diana decided she would shake Camilla’s hand. But Diana didn’t stop there. She needed Camilla to understand that she wasn’t playing along any longer.
While most of the dresses that the late Princess Diana wore became a sensation, the same is not the case with Princess Camilla. So, the costume team of ‘The Crown’ will have some libertywhile dressing Camilla (played by Emerald Fennel), especially in her cute, intimate moments with Prince Charles. Various famous looks of Diana will be copied, but the designers say that they are trying to leave a bit of them from those costumes.
Diana was fondly called as the ‘People’s Princess’. Shooting one such moment of Diana, Emma Corrin (who plays Diana in ‘The Crown’) was photographed wearing a stunning re-creation of a gold-embroidered, pearl-embellished Victor Edelstein gown and bolero jacket that Diana wore to attend a Welsh National Opera Gala production of “Falstaff” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
The women would be at war and their insane feud will be highlighted through these costumes. While Diana became a public eye-candy with her choice of dresses, Camilla carved a place in the heart of Prince Charles. Their costumes on ‘The Crown’ Season 4 will speak of their unsaid hatred for each other.
