His death was announced by his record label, Drag City, in a post on Twitter. The post read, “We couldn’t be more sorry to tell you this. David Berman passed away earlier today. A great friend and one of the most inspiring individuals we’ve ever known is gone. Rest easy, David.”
David Berman made a comeback with his latest album in July, Purple Mountains. In fact, this comeback was after a span of substance abuse and depression that grasped the artist for the most part of the 21st century. So much so that he even attempted suicide in 2003.
“When it’s done I want there to be something for the listener to interpret,” David Berman told the Washington Post in 2008. “When I write I want there to be more than one level of meaning. I want just a few words to be able to carry lots of different thoughts and ideas.”
David Berman’s friend and collaborate too took to Twitter to express, “Depression is crippling… he was a one of a kinder the songs he wrote were his main passion esp at the end. Hope death equals peace cuz he could sure use it.”
