With popular sitcoms and television series getting rebooted for spin-offs and revivals, it is about time CBS gives TBBT and ‘Person of Interest’ a much deserved second chance.
Two shows that featured on CBS networks‘ absolute best are undoubtedly TBBT and ‘Person of Interest’. Both shows brought in a massive viewership for the network, and instead of continuing to lead television, were cancelled. But now that popular sitcoms are getting rebooted for spin-offs and revivals, CBS needs to get on with the program!
- Why TBBT and ‘Person Of Interest’ are the networks’ greatest hits
- CBS network should call for a renewal of at least one of the two
- Is TBBT Season 13 and ‘Person of Interest’ Season 6 happening?
To the viewer, ‘Person of Interest’ starts as an engaging crime-technological drama and then turns into an engaging and thought-provoking series. Compared to most CBS network shows, it is criminally underrated and was cancelled after just 5 seasons, regardless of its viewership. TBBT, too, had a successful 12-year run and went on to become one of the most popular sitcoms of its time!
So, why were two of CBS’ most loved shows cancelled, even though they top the list of most anticipated reboots?
Why TBBT and ‘Person Of Interest’ are the networks’ greatest hits
Jonathan Nolan, whose previous work includes ‘Westworld’, ‘Memento’, and collaborations with his brother Christopher Nolan, created ‘Person of Interest’ in 2011. The show is a sci-fi drama series that focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in fighting and preventing crime. Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) is a computer designer who builds “The Machine”, a supercomputer that predicts terror crimes.
Finch’s creation learns about any future threats through monitored phone calls, CCTV, and other surveillance devices that track citizens across the world, every day. It also has the ability to foretell crimes that the government deems too insignificant to do anything about.
Then there’s John Reese (Jim Caviezel), who seems to be an innocent homeless man but has a huge secret. He’s a former Special Forces soldier and CIA agent working with Finch while being hunted down by the government. Together, Reese and Finch are more than your run-of-the-mill crime-fighting duo, their performances establish a chilling atmosphere right from the first episode.
On the other hand, TBBT introduced us to characters that have been etched into our memories. The stellar cast includes Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg, and Kaley Cuoco, five popular names today, owing to the success of the show. The endearing geeks and physicists, Sheldon and Leonard, along with their just-as-geeky friends, Raj and Howard, are strange but hilarious!
While ‘Person of Interest’ transformed the way we look at sci-fi in television, TBBT shined light on a culture that had been lurking in the shadows for far too long.
CBS network should call for a renewal of at least one of the two
TBBT has been the network’s most recent hit to go off air, with the season 12 finale that premiered last year. Fans had been familiar with the characters and seen them develop from the very beginning, and wanted to see more!
A new season was promised by creator Chuck Lorre, but that was before Jim Parsons called it quits on the show. The actor who rose to fame with his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper in the series realised that it was time for him to move on to different projects.
What was once a top-rated drama, ‘Person of Interest’ too was cancelled after just 5 seasons. Creator Jonathan Nolan and showrunner Greg Plageman weren’t even given a heads up by the network! In an interview with “Buzzfeed”, Nolan confirmed, “No one was clear with us that this was a final season; we kind of decided that this was a final season. You read the tea leaves here, and it was clear that with a reduced order it’s not likely that we were coming back”, he said.
We’re just glad that the team behind ‘Person of Interest’ decided to put an end to the series with grace. We couldn’t have asked for a better ending!
Is TBBT Season 13 and ‘Person of Interest’ Season 6 happening?
CBS network said that ‘Person of Interest’ was the fastest-growing drama on broadcast television during the premiere of its first two seasons. With 9.42 million total viewers through the course of five seasons, the series was well-received and critically acclaimed. TBBT’s season 12 finale alone averaged 23.44 million viewers according to Nielsen, a rather large figure in comparison.
‘Person of Interest’ brought a much-needed fresh perspective to sci-fi dramas. It really made viewers wonder if vigilante justice could be an acceptable way of solving crime. TBBT, too, ventured at bringing nerd culture to the forefront of the series, presenting a very nuanced outlook on it.
With Netflix and other streaming platforms foraying into the world of reboots, we wonder if TBBT and ‘Person of Interest’ will be revived! While we still wait for an official announcement from CBS, we’re going to keep watching reruns!
