Who doesn’t remember Top Gun?
Tom Cruise’s legendary on-screen outing as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell had many roaring and many clutching at their hearts. More than three decades later, the movie still has the same effect. God knows we were waiting for the sequel with bated breath, especially after the special trailer released at last year’s Comic-Con.
However, many plans were quashed in 2020, thanks to the corona scare. In 2019, more than 33 years later Captain Marvel entered our lives, in an entirely different universe. Two heroes, one human, other superhuman, on our screens nearly three decades apart. But why are we telling you this?
What is the connection between Captain Marvel and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun. Well, there almost was. Let’s find out more.
When Captain Marvel’s Past and Present Came Together
In some of the preliminary sketches that Andy Park, Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development, revealed that he wanted Carol Denvers aka Captain Marvel’s past and present to collide. If you have watched the movies you would remember that after absorbing the tesseract’s energy and being with the Kree’s, Agent Vers or the subsequent Captain Marvel has no recollection of her human past where she was known as US Air Force Pilot Carol Denvers.
As she accidentally comes to Earth and in her quest to locate the Skrulls, her ‘supposed’ enemies, unearths her own past, Vers realises she is Carol and then claims her identity as the superhero Captain Marvel. Andy Park wanted that moment to be a phenomenal one, reflective in her costume as she steps out wearing her own flight jacket over her costume.
This jacket makes an appearance in the movie, when Monica, daughter of Maria Rambeau, Carol’s oldest friend, offers it to the superhero.
Take a look:
We think it would have been quite legendary.
But Carol almost had a Top Gun moment!
Well, even if Andy Park couldn’t have his own Top Gun moment for the Cap, Carol Denvers Top Gun moment was surely there in the movie.
Remember when she steals the clothes off a dummy and takes off on a bike? That was pretty cool and had us all cheering. Though it wasn’t the same jacket, the biker jacket came quite close to it.
In fact, she carried that look for a long time, till she met Maria, even if she didn’t recognise her. Quite cool, eh?
Carol Denvers and what’s next
Well, we all know what happened after the events of Captain Marvel. The movie may have hit the big screens in 2019, but the timeline goes way back, in fact, if you watch it in the Marvel order, this one comes right after ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’.
Carol forms a bond with Nick Fury, and it is after that encounter that the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. starts the ‘Avengers Initiative’, a quest to find more superhumans and form an army which can save the world. Captain Marvel then makes an appearance post the disintegration of half the Earth’s population, including Fury, and is a part of the legendary battle which leads to the defeat of Thanos.
Captain Marvel will soon be back on the big screens in May 2022, with the next movie in the franchise, and frankly, we cannot wait. Even though this was just a touch-and-go moment with the Top Gun, with Marvel, you never know. What if we do get Tom Cruise and some Top Gun-esque moments in Captain Marvel. Keeping our fingers crossed.
