About Caption Marvel
Captain Marvel was the MCU’s first female-led solo film, telling the story of Carol Danvers, a former Air Force pilot.
The pilot after a crash suffers from amnesia and become part of Kree, not knowing the truth of her origin. There was huge pressure riding on the film because of it being the first female-led movie for Marvel and it largely delivered. Larson went on to appear in Avengers: Endgame. She is slated to be a part of Captain Marvel 2 and other projects for MCU.
Though the film’s success is a standard MCU affair, the controversy it attracted is most certainly not. Every diehard fan of Brie Larson wants to know why is Captain Marvel, and in particular its star Brie Larson, so controversial. There are multiple reasons for it, at least different manifestations of the same reason.
Why Captain Marvel became a matter of controversy?
While most Marvel films are generally popular with wide audiences, Captain Marvel is known for being the most divisive movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel isn’t alone, there are a select few that are more broadly considered the ‘bad’ MCU films. Thor: The Dark World, The Incredible Hulk, few have similar divisive opinions much like Captain Marvel. The fans were divided long before Captain Marvel even released. The reason people started hating her was firstly, rather lackluster trailers, despite being the first-women-led movie. When the movie released, fans didn’t just criticize the action from the movie but the apparent fact that Captain Marvel played by Brie Larson didn’t smile enough.
YouTube was flooded with anti-Captain Marvel videos and comments, to derail the marketing campaign. There were attempts tobomb the reviews for the film on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite these attempts, it turned out, the film was pretty solid. It played well with most audiences and critics, and, of course, had that massive box-office haul.
But, despite that success, Brie Larson and Captain Marvel had to occupy a strange discriminatory space in the MCU. There has remained a level of pushback against it, even though Captain Marvel continued – through the build-up to Avengers: Endgame, and then beyond it. Much of the Captain Marvel controversy and division is due to the film’s star, Brie Larson.
Why so much hatred for Brie Larson?
Brie Larson was a popular choice when she was announced as the MCU’s Captain Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016. She is known as an actress with the ability to blend comedy and drama. For fans, she was a rising star who could help lead a new generation of the MCU, and moreover, she’s an Oscar winner. There was little reason to doubt she’d do a good job as Carol Danvers, and surely Larson was a perfect fit.

Things changed when Captain Marvel’s release date was closed. Larson’s political views is largely the reason for the unwanted backlash. Like many MCU actors, Larson is politically vocal and a feminist. Both in the film industry and the world in general, she is a big believer in pushing for greater equality. Larson once said that her press days were “overwhelmingly white male” and that she “decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive“. Later, she went on to clarify her comments, but the fanbase were rubbed up the wrong way by her comments. She was blatantly accused of misandry by her beloved fans.
She was targeted for poor line delivery in the film, and that she wasn’t muscular enough for a superhero. She didn’t smile enough was also highlighted. Those particularly commenting on Larson’s lack of smile were making sexist remarks and trolling her. Whatever might be the controversy, Captain Marvel went on to appear in Avengers: Endgame. Her Endgame role ended up being important but not dominant despite some concerns about how she’d fit into the movie.
There are constant rumors that Brie Larson is leaving the MCU. But the rumors are completely unsubstantiated, and there’s nothing to suggest that Marvel would want to part ways with the actress who has just led one of their most successful solo movies to date. In fact, she is going to be a major face of the franchise going forward, and Marvel can’t do without her.
Larson wouldn’t either want to be out of the MCU, after signing a multi-films deal with the studio. She will continue to remain an important entity for Marvel in the days to come, even if she attracts controversy.
