Recently, a piece of news went viral placing Captain Marvel in the Age of Ultron. But if ever the director had gone forward with the decision, Brie Larson might never have been Captain Marvel. Neither would she have won an Oscar. (Maybe in a parallel world, this did happen!)
Deleted scenes from the sets (that went viral recently) place Captain Marvel (Brie Larson’s character) in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. This raised many questions, the most-asked being ‘Why was Captain Marvel not cast in the movie despite the plans?’ The answer was: to put Scarlett Witch into focus. But what would have happened if the production had given a green flag for Captain Marvel in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’?
In the worst-case scenario, Brie Larson would never have won an Oscar.
We have our reasons! Scroll down to know.
A not so Marvel-ous future
Yes, that future could have been very much possible. While filming for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ kicked off in early 2014 (mid-February), the casting started in 2013 and went on till early 2014. With the new revelations of Captain Marvel’s deleted sequences from ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron,’ it also became common knowledge that MCU was auditioning for the role.
But where was Brie Larson when Avengers: Age of Ultron was looking for Captain Marvel?
In 2013, Brie Larson appeared in a couple of supporting roles in Don Jon (September) and The Spectacular Now (August). Not only this, August 2013 saw one of her most spectacular performances in Short Term 12.
While ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ was filming in 2014, Brie Larson featured in The Gambler whose filming kicked off in January 2014. (Avengers’ principal filming took place in February 2014). While her role was not a major one in the movie, Brie Larson got a role that bagged her the most iconic award, Oscar. Filming for ‘Room’ kicked off in November 2014.
All these dates point to the fact that there was a very small window of opportunity for Brie Larson to have been cast in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. While the role of Captain Marvel was anticipated as a small one, it is unsure that she would have been cast for it at all. After all, while the Marvel movie producers were looking for the Avengers’ cast, Brie Larson had yet to give her best performances (Room, 2015).
Not without my Oscar
Had she been cast in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, as a ritual MCU would have made a solo movie based on her character, Captain Marvel.
Flush: there goes the golden glory of an Oscar!
One of the reasons why Brie Larson bagged an Oscar as Best Actress was because she really nailed the role. The Captain Marvel actor, Brie Larson researched for her role well. She went so into the character that she isolated herself for a whole month! All this research and hard work might not have been possible with the fame that came from her Marvel movie and superhero character. In fact, the chances for casting in ‘Room’ would have also narrowed down.
It was not until 2016 that reports of Brie Larson being cast as Captain Marvel started dropping in.
Marvel vs Oscars: Infinity War
Recently there has been much chatter against Marvel being called ‘cinema’. With Martin Scorsese and Jennifer Aniston’s comments, Hollywood was split in two over the discussion. With all the fame that Marvel movies have gained in the past years, they have gained criticism too. While Brie Larson is an impeccable actor, she might never have won an Oscar for her role as Captain Marvel in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. In fact, it is highly arguable that she would have even won it for a movie with Captain Marvel in the limelight.
Let’s confess it, Oscar did give Brie Larson much-needed fame and recognition on the global stage. We know her now because of her Captain Marvel role, but we know her as an amazing actor because of her Oscar-winning role in ‘Room’
