With Captain Marvel 2 the female prowess will peak in the MCU both on and off-camera
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel does not lack tropes of feminism. Be it comics or movies Marvel’s gendered representation in growing leaps and bounds furthermore with Captain Marvel 2. For the sequel, Marvel has gathered more female energy both on and off camera. Recently, during the Disney Investor Day Marvel CCO, Kevin Feige made some exciting announcements. Among those was the announcement of a female director and cast members for Carol Danvers upcoming feature.
Cast of Captain Marvel 2
During the Investor Day presentation, Feige confirmed the addition of new entrants Iman Vellani as Pakistani-American teenage hero Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris as older Monica Rambeau aka Photon. Together with Larson’s Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan make a formidable trio on the screen ready to take any foe head-on. From the start of her stint as Captain Marvel Larson was excited to bring a dash of feminism in the genre now she gets her wish.
Iman Vellani aka Ms Marvel will be introduced in her own Disney+ series hopefully in Phase 4. As per the comic Kamala is a big Captain Marvel fan so her gradual succession from Disney+ to the movie makes sense. On the other hand, Monica Rambeau was introduced as a young child played by Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel origin story. She is reintroduced in a grown-up version played by Teyonah Parris in ongoing WandaVision series on Disney+.
By far from the looks of it the female for female theme seems to continue on-screen in Captain Marvel sequel.
Female Leads Behind The Camera
During the same Disney panel Feige also confirmed Captain Marvel 2 will be helmed by Nia DaCosta. An indie director DaCosta has recently directed Netflix horror Candyman. Marvel had been long searching for a female director for Carol Danvers’ another round of adventure and their search ended in DaCosta coming on board making her first Black female director in the franchise. Didn’t we say Marvel’s inclusivity game is strong!
Scribe Megan McDonnell has been engaged to write the story and the screenplay. She is a staff writer on Disney+ WandaVision series. Given Monica Rambeau made her debut on the series McDonnell’s writing the script for Captain Marvel 2 makes sense.

Captain Marvel 2 Plot
While there is so much female energy engaged in the project a female centric storyline makes absolute sense. Feige confirmed that events of WandaVision will directly affect Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange’s sequel. Furthermore, a Secret Invasion series has been announced which will certainly tie into the sequel given the Kree-Skrull war storyline.
Interestingly, a Reddit leak claims Marvel is set to gather an A Force team in Captain Marvel 2. Along with now confirmed casting of Vellani and Parris the leak predicted addition of Mighty Thor [Natalie Portman], Valkyrie [Tessa Thompson], Scarlet Witch [Elizabeth Olsen], She-Hulk [Tatiana Maslany], and more. The leak further described the plot as ‘cosmic horror’ inspired by The Aliens and A Space Odyssey. While it looks like the genre DaCosta and McDonnell can head into we’ll know for sure when movie hits the theatres.
Captain Marvel 2 is scheduled to release on November, 11, 2022.
