Who is Giancarlo Esposito aka Gus Fring?
While almost everyone remembers the unmatchable Bryan Cranston for his portrayal of Walter White and his reel partner in crime Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul, another iconic character from the show, that deserves a mention, is Giancarlo Esposito’s Gustavo “Gus” Fring. For the uninitiated, in ‘Breaking Bad’, Fring posed as a restaurant chain owner publicly but was, under the covers, affiliated to a Mexican drug cartel. The interactions between Fring and White become part of the show quite early on. Walter White worked as the meth cook, employed by Fring before the two had a falling out. Despite always staying a step ahead of White, Fring’s story ended with White taking the help of Fring’s handicapped old foe, Hector Salamanca, to kill him.
Gus Fring was also part of the prequel series ‘Better Call Saul’. Esposito’s Gus inches closer and closer to the viewers in the show. The prequel series gives the audience a closer view of his complex character where the cold-blooded meth tycoon’s unflinching willingness to off his enemies is balanced by a warm dedication towards his community.
Giancarlo Esposito suggests another spin-off
Seems like playing one of the big bad in ‘Breaking Bad’ and a villain in ‘Better Call Saul’ wasn’t enough for Giancarlo Esposito. In a recent interview, Esposito revealed that he has another idea for a spin-off series focused on Gus Fring.
Speaking to “Esquire”, Esposito talked about his time on ‘Breaking Bad’ and his idea for a spin-off of the series, focused on Gus Fring. Esposito revealed to have a whole storyline at the back of his head in which Fring came from political royalty.
“I feel like Gus came from the world of order. And that his order came. He was a military man. Out of the military, he gained the ability to observe. You can’t lead unless you can follow … In my brain, he was high up in a military government.”
Adding that his character Gus could have run the country with the power he was handed, he chose a different path, which was to be his own man and to find his own power. And not just the plotline, Esposito also has a title in mind, “The Rise of Gus“. But, before we jump to the potential Gus Fring spin-off, which has not yet been confirmed, we have to make it through the first ‘Breaking Bad’ prequel, ‘Better Call Saul’.
The show is set to drop its sixth season soon if it kicks-start filming by March 2021. If the show follows its production schedule, hopefully, we might get to see episodes of the series by the second half of the year. Tell us what you think about Giancarlo Esposito’s idea of ‘Breaking Bad’ spin-off series focused on Gus Fring.
