Fans have found that Sheldon Cooper is actually Barney Stinson in an alternate dimension.
People have lately found a connection between the lead men Sheldon Cooper and Barney Stinson of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘How I Met Your Mother’ respectively. The eagle-eyed fans have applied the Butterfly Effect to come to this conclusion.
Let’s find out how the Butterfly Effect connects the two characters who are polar opposites.

The Butterfly Effect
Those who believe in an alternate universe form various theories on how one person will behave in an alternate dimension. One of the widely accepted theory states that every person is a different version of who he perceives himself to be in his own reality. The alternate dimension is linked to the Butterfly Effect, which states that every decision has multiple choices, and different realities exist in which those different decisions are made and different personalities are formed.
One of the integral components of chaos theory is the Butterfly Effect, also described in general as “sensitive dependence on initial conditions“. It states that a single small change in one state of a deterministic, nonlinear system can lead to vastly different changes at a later state. For example, an accurate weather prediction could prove wrong by unpredictable condition, like a butterfly flapping its wings.
In short, the theory tries to emphasize the fact that something small and unknowable can result in massive changes. As a human, the small choices you make, even without thinking twice, transform you into the person you are today. And one small change in decision can make someone become an entirely different person, with different beliefs and values.
Applying the Butterfly Effect on Sheldon Cooper and Barney Stinson
The fans of both ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘How I Met Your Mother’ have applied this theory in fiction, stating that two kids were simultaneously born in two parallel universes. In one of the dimension, he was named Sheldon. And in another, Barney. Due to the different small choices they made, each became a drastically different individual. The former became a neurotic, misogynistic geek, while the other became a bar-hopping ladies’ man.
Barney grew up to be a bachelor who wears suits to bars. While in an alternate universe, Sheldon is a genius who went to college at 11. To prove this connection, fans are now demanding a prequel show on Barney as well, just like ‘Young Sheldon‘. Such a prequel series may support the notion even more.
Jim Parsons shared an interesting anecdote to carry forward our interest in this fan theory.
He said that he actually auditioned for ‘How I Met Your Mother’ for the role of Barney. He knew as soon as he entered the audition room that he is not fit for the role. But the makers were considering him for the role.
“They actually made me come back in as if they were interested”Jim said,
“Not interested enough because the right person got that part, Neil Patrick Harris. I find this fascinating that I have that loose-ish connection to that part and that you’ve got this theory, which is not true”.
Well, both Sheldon and Barney are incredible characters, we can hope that CBS does a crossover series on them. Till then, ponder over this interesting theory on Sheldon Cooper and Barney Stinson and let us know in the comments box
