DC has just dropped The Batman 2020 trailer and Robert Pattinson’s vengeance as the new Dark Knight looks delicious. But it does have something that we have seen before — the nuances of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.
Vengeance is here! When it was announced that the next Batman would be played by Robert Pattinson, not many were pleased. Keeping aside all the phenomenal performances he has given, people’s perception hardly moved away from his vampire act in the Twilight movies.
Highlights:
- DC drops teasers and trailers for the next phase
- The Batman 2020 trailer starring Robert Pattinson is here
- The trailer has wowed the fans and critics
- Does it bear resemblance to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker?
Not to forget the fact that this was the legacy of some great names such as Adam West, George Clooney, Christian Bale, or even Ben Affleck from the ongoing Justice League series of DC superheroes. Nevertheless, the makers had faith and they went ahead. The Batman 2020 trailer is out with the new lithe and fast Batman, and we are blown away.
Robert Pattinson fits right into the league with his dark act in the dreary streets of Gotham, amidst villains, and fighting his own darkness. However, this act has had us thinking: does it bear resemblance to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, which earned him an Academy award last year?
Quiz: How Well Do You Really Know The Batman?
The Batman 2020: A mix of realism and fantasy
In the trailer, we get a glimpse of the infamous Riddler with his clues that he leaves for Commissioner Gordon and Batman. We also get a glimpse of Catwoman, played by Zoë Kravitz.
Gotham has always been a dark backdrop where DC’s dark knight rose from the ashes to fight the biggest villains, the hardest one being the Joker. Cinematically, the Joker has mostly overshadowed Batman.
The reason behind this is the former’s madness and realism which finds its root in nihilism, which is a darkness directly in contrast to the rich white boy image of Bruce Wayne aka Batman. The latter’s aim is to protect Gotham, without descending into the dark panes that bother the city. But in order to fight darkness, one needs to know it.

And thus, when we look at The Batman 2020 trailer, we see a different façade of Batman — not as a hero, but as someone who is figuring out where he stands in the battle of humans and villains. We have Robert Pattinson, sifting between clues to shift gears between his human form and superhero avatar.
This makes us wonder: does it follow the similar theme as the 2019 Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix?

Joker: The nihilism therein
Joker was the tale of a failed stand-up comedian who slowly delves into the dark depths of life as success evades him at every stage and mockery embraces him. Slowly, he turns it inwards and turns into a killer who takes on the rich and stands for the poor, thus turning into a dark messiah who smiles with a painted and tear-stricken face.
The performance by Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck aka Joker was celebrated, critically and commercially, earning him various nominations and even an Academy award. This movie served as an origin story for the DC supervillain and also where we meet young Bruce and how he is related to Arthur. However, the story flits back and forth between the real world and the fictional scenarios spun by Arthur. Thus, after a point of time, the movie culminates into an alternate reality where we are seeing the world and instances purely from the point of view of Arthur as he transforms into the Joker.
The Batman 2020, replete with its darkness, seems to be drawing inspiration from the same genre of superhero-supervillain style of storytelling, where heroes are humans, rather than untouchable gods.
The darkness of The Batman 2020
The Batman 2020 is complete with our favourite heroes and villains from the dark and destroyed Gotham city. However, after the brilliant nuance of Christopher Nolan, and a slightly downplayed one in the Warner Brothers production starring Ben Affleck, it will have to be seen how true to the comics Robert Pattinson’s Batman and story will be.
One thing is for sure. The madness in Bruce’s eyes is real this time. This Batman does not look like the composed, rich guy who used his billions to save the city. This time, Bruce has the revenge of a lost life and family in his eyes. Like Joker, he is making his suffering and loss his strength, along with his wealth. How good it will be will have to be seen when the movie hits our screens.
