A petition to remove Amber Heard from the role of ‘Mera’ in ‘Aquaman 2’ has been doing the rounds in light of her legal battle with Johnny Depp. What has Warner Bros. decided for ‘Aquaman 2’? Read on to know the details!
In 2018, James Dan’s ‘Aquaman’ became a remarkably surprising smash hit. Nobody expected much from the movie following the disappointing bombing of ‘Justice League’ at the box office. But ‘Aquaman’, the first solo spin-off starring Jason Momoa, not only became a billion-dollar hit but also now stands as one of the biggest earner for a DC adaptation.

- ‘Aquaman’ not in theatres before 2022
So, naturally, not only is Warner Bros. looking at a much larger sequel for ‘Aquaman’, but they hope to make it one of the biggest franchise DC has ever seen, is not lost on them.
But will Amber Heard be a part of the much-anticipated sequel? Let’s find out!
Amber Heard Facing ‘Aquaman’ Fans’ Wrath
A nasty, lengthy, and prolific legal battle with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, has been proving to be a hurdle for both of them in their professional capacity. The on-going divorce settlement between the two actors is taking a turn for the worse as Depp is now allegedly accusing Heard of faking evidence of domestic abuse.
And, if the accusations against Heard is found to be true, she could be heading to prison, which would jeopardize her role as Mera in DC’s ‘Aquaman’. But it does also look like many fans of the film don’t want Heard to return to the DC adaptation at all.
The narrative between Heard and Depp is exceptionally muddled and we, as spectators, cannot possibly know the truth. Some fans, though, have taken matters into their own hands and started an online petition asking her to be removed from the ‘Aquaman’ franchise.
Will Amber Heard be Mera in the upcoming instalments?
Before the legal battle ensued, and all was good in the world, Heard was a fan-favourite and one of the core stars in ‘Aquaman’. Mera, her character in the movie, was widely appreciated by critics and fans alike.
But, since the legal battle, things have changed. The petition, which is available on change.org, titled ‘Remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2’ mentions Heard as a domestic abuser. The petition further requests Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment not to glamorise a domestic abuser and ignore victims’ suffering.
With already half a million signatures on the petition, Warner Bros. most likely won’t be taking the risk of promoting what the fans are calling ‘domestic abuse’ and hiring Heard in the ‘Aquaman’ franchise.
But, only time will tell if the makers of the film go ahead and replace Heard from the superhero movie.
‘Aquaman 2’ in theatres not before 2022
Even though it is typical of a major studio to not wait too long before coming up with the sequel to a successful movie, ‘Aquaman 2’ is not going to hit the theatres before December 2022.
The long wait for the sequel comes due to Warner Bros. enjoying the fruit of their own success. For a studio which hasn’t enjoyed the kind of success Marvel has, Warner Bros. is lately been doing well. With one of the biggest superhero movie ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, James Gunn’s ‘Suicide Squad 2’, Matt Reeves ‘Batman’, the studio has had its hands full.
The delay in ‘Aquaman’ can be attributed to these movies. But the delay can only mean one thing. ‘Aquaman’ will come to us, bigger, better, and stronger, and we can’t wait to dive deep into the underwater with Jason Momoa leading the way, with or without Amber Heard.
