The show has a bigger fan base than ever
The American supernatural teen drama television series was developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on a popular book series by the same name. The series first premiered in 2009 on the CW network. The pilot of the series has been believed to have attracted the largest audience for the CW network since it began in 2006, with about 3.6 million viewers for the first season.
The show has been critically acclaimed for its one-of-a-kind storyline and great screen presence, which resulted in four People’s Choice Award and many Teen Choice Awards.
After the show ended in 2017, fans were not completely left disappointed as ‘The Originals’ was still running successfully. Following its end in 2018, another spin-off titled ‘Legacies’ was created and is currently in its second season, with a third in the making.
Ian Somerhalder believes Damon and Stefan didn’t deserve peace
‘The Vampire Diaries‘ series might have ended in 2017, but the way it ended was unsatisfactory for Ian Somerhalder. In the last episode, Damon and Elena reunited to live a happy and fulfilling life. Stefan Salvatore sacrificed himself for the greater good and died, leaving Caroline Forbes behind. After living a fulfilling mortal life, Damon died and finally found peace with his brother, and the series ended with the two hugging each other. However, Ian believes that the vampires in the show did not deserve a happy ending.

In an interaction with fans at the 2018 Wizard World Comic Con in New Orleans, the actor said, “I don’t think I would have changed anything, other than I think that Paul and I should have just been on the beach in our speedos with a bottle of rum. Honestly, by the way, I am actually not kidding”, he said.
Along with that, he also stated that Damon and Elena should not have ended up together. “These guys raped and pillaged and killed probably hundreds of people from Season 1 to Season 8, and I think they should have come and gone and humanity should have won. Not Damon and Elena. But that’s just me”, Ian said.
The ending that was meant to happen, but didn’t
In an interview with ‘Entertainment Weekly’, Julie Plec discussed how she intended for Damon and Stefan to both sacrifice themselves for Elena.

“Back in season two, when Kevin and I were sitting in the mall and we had fallen in love with this series and this story about two brothers who loved the same girl and the love triangle was kicking into high gear, we said to ourselves: When all is said and done, when this show is over, both brothers should die in the name of saving their girl and then be watching her like ghosts … as she went off into the sunset to live her life and maybe marry Matt Donovan or maybe become a doctor, but that those brothers would be side-by-side watching her live”, Plec told EW.
However, Nina Dobrev’s departure from the show led to the showrunners abandoning their original idea. “Her departure sealed the romantic contract between Damon and Elena”,
Plec added. “In that moment, to me, the show ceased to be about a love triangle and became a show about the power of these brothers and their love for each other. And so, there was no way in hell I was killing both of them and leaving neither of them with the happy ending”.
Season 9 release date
Like for any other popular show, fans have taken to social media platforms to express how much they really want a new season soon. “’The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Originals’ is a story about an unbreakable bond between brothers. I miss them so much”, tweeted a fan.
Another fan tweet asked the showrunner a very important question that said, “@julieplec will there be a season 9 of the vampire diaries?!”
A third fan suggested something rather very interesting which might make season 9 a reality. “Why doesn’t @julieplec just make the vampire diaries season 9 by the last book of tvd? Elena going back in time and just living her life without the vampires? Like an alternative ending. It would be so cool @ninadobrev @cwtvd @carolinedries @iansomerhalder“, tweeted the fan.
Unfortunately, for fans, no official confirmation has been made yet. However, all hope is not lost as speculations online suggest that the actors would like to reboot the show in the near future.
But for now, re-watching the show and the spin-off series is all that the fans will have to do with till their wishes are granted.
