Is Syfy giving a season 5 of the series the go-ahead? Read on to find out.
Loosely based on the 1995 movie of the same name, the time-travel series, 12 Monkeys was a successful drama that aired for four seasons on Syfy. Developed by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, the science fiction mystery met with positive reviews throughout its run. It also received awards for its cinematography in both America and Canada. The series found acclaim for its crisp and compelling storytelling and its fascinating take on future dystopia. It came to an end after four seasons in 2018. But is the show being rebooted with a new cast for a season 5 by Syfy?
- 12 Monkeys: A complex time travel saga
- Season 4 : A labyrinthine plot with a happy ending
- Who will replace Amanda Schull?
12 Monkeys: A complex time travel saga
The series began with James Cole (Aaron Stanford) being recruited by Katarina Jones (Barbara Sukowa), a physicist to travel back in time to 2015 and prevent the organization, “Army of the 12 Monkeys” from spreading a deadly virus. As per the original timeline, the virus spread and killed 7 billion people by 2017 and eventually caused an increasing number of defects in people for generations to come. Cole met virologist Cassandra “Cassie” Railly (Amanda Schull) and together they set out to fight the enemy.
12 Monkeys packed an emotional punch in a science fiction backdrop. Despite being a little heavy on the complexities at times, it came through with its stellar direction and cinematography. The series was full of suspense, leaving its viewers clues in every episode to unravel the mystery and would frequently revisit previous events to explain situations. The final season saw 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the critical consensus reading, “12 Monkeys continues to raise the bar with each marvellously complex episode in a knock-out fourth season, that proves as unpredictable as it is gratifying.”
The show also saw some spectacular acting performances from its cast cautiously ensuring that the characters on the show are distinct from their movie counterparts.
Season 4 : A labyrinthine plot with a happy ending
An obfuscating yet electrifying plot, the final season of the show had an intricate futuristic dieresis at play. The finale saw the final showdown between team James and Cassie and team ‘Army of the 12 Monkeys’ led by Olivia (Alisen Down).
The good guys finally figured out that for things to be normal, Cole had to be made to disappear from the timeline. The final episode saw Cole erased from the timeline and Cassie still remembering him. It finally concluded with Dr. Jones figuring out a method of bringing Cole back, giving everyone the happy ending they deserved.
The series never received exceptional ratings but was always sold as a show worthy of being binge-watched by Syfy. Therefore, after wrapping up the story in 4 seasons there was never really any talk of bringing the show back for another season. But with sci-fi shows getting popular after the success of Dark on Netflix, is Syfy considering reviving the series?
Who will replace Amanda Schull?
The role of Cassie was played by Madeleine Stowe in the 1995 movie version and by Amanda Schull in the 2015 series. The roles were different in terms of their interpretations and were both appreciated by viewers and critics. So, who will replace Amanda in a season 5?
Syfy is not considering renewing 12 Monkeys for now. The series was always low on viewership and despite offering good content, never could reach a widespread audience. In case the makers do decide to reboot the show for a season 5 a few years down the line, they may possibly revive it with an entirely new cast. In a few years an OTT like Netflix may step in to bring the series back but that does not seem to be happening any time soon.
Did you watch 12 Monkeys? Who do you think can be the best replacement for Amanda Schull in case a season 5 is made?
