Belgian Grand Prix: Charles Leclerc claims his first victory in Formula One
Monégasque racing driver Charles Leclerc has won his first Formula One race on Sunday at Belgian Grand Prix. This is the first win of a season for an Italian team.
The 21-year-old Charles Leclerc crossed the line 0.9 seconds ahead of British driver and World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton finished the race as runner-up but extended his overall championship lead to 65 points over his teammate Bottas.
The former Russian Grand Prix winner Valtteri Bottas finished the race at the third position. Leclerc’s teammate Sebastian Vettel finished fourth.
Charles Leclerc dedicates win to Hubert
Two days ago, French driver Anthoine Hubert lost his life because of a high-speed accident at Formula Two race at the same track that hosted the Formula One race. Since 1994, this was the first death due to an accident at a motor race.
In the year 1994, Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger and Brazil’s Ayrton Senna lost their lives due to accidents in a Formula One race. Yesterday, before the race all the participants in Formula One held one minute silence in memory of the French driver Anthoine Hubert. Charles Leclerc dedicated his win in Belgian Grand Prix to Anthoine Hubert. Leclerc has raced with Hubert in the early days of his career.
After winning the race, French driver Leclerc looked up to the sky and remembered Hubert. After the race, Charles Leclerc said, “My first ever race I did it with Anthoine, Esteban (Ocon), Pierre (Gasly)”. He also said, “I can’t fully enjoy my first victory, but it will definitely be a memory I will keep forever”.
About the race
The 21-year-old Monégasque got a perfect start and led the race from the first lap. In 32nd lap of the race, Lewis Hamilton finally got past Charles Leclerc’s teammate Sebastian Vettel. For a few minutes, it looked like Charles Leclerc would miss the victory again but this time he won the race. The 21-year-old soaked the pressure very well up to the chequered flag.
The 34-year-old British racing driver said, “The Ferraris were just too fast on the straights and very hard to keep up with them”. “He’s had it coming all year so I’m really happy for him,” he added after Charles Leclerc’s victory.
Four-time F1 World Champion Vettel helped his teammate
Sebastian Vettel got a good start but did not win the race. He helped his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in winning the race by giving him the way. “I couldn’t stay with the pace that I had to, then we covered for Lewis and at that point, we pitted way earlier than everyone else and that determined the race result,” said Sebastian Vettel.
Albon’s impressive debut for Red Bulls
The 23-year-old Alexander Albon made an impressive debut for his new team ‘Red Bull’. He finished the race at fifth position. The 23-year-old Thai-British racing driver said, “I had some good fun out there and I enjoyed this race a lot. “I started off the weekend very nervous and if you had told me I’d finish the race fifth I’d be very happy, but I’m a bit more relaxed now”. In this year, he has won two races.
