As many as six Indian boxers have entered into the finals of the ongoing 38th GeeBee Boxing Tournament 2019.
Among those who entered the finals was Shiva Thapa, the youngest Indian boxer to win an Asian Championship. Thapa secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Russia’s Mikhail Varlamov in the 60kg category.
Mohammed Hussamuddin also made it to the finals in the 56kg category.
Thapa will take on Finland’s Arslan Khataev in the finals.
In addition to Thapa and Hussamuddin, three more players, namely Dinesh Dagar, Naveen Kumar and Govind Sahani entered the finals of the tournament. While Dinesh advanced in the 69kg category, Naveen Kumar and Govind Sahani secured their final berth in the 91kg and 49kg categories, respectively.
Dagar and Naveen showed impeccable grit and they prevailed over Russia’s Sergei Sobylinski and Australia’s Justis Huni, respectively, to secure their place in the finals.
Sahani produced a flawless 5-0 victory over Russia’s Artysh Sojan 5-0 to secure his place in the finals.
The tournament, however, came to an end for Sachin Siwach (52kg) and Sumit Sangwan (91kg) who lost to Kyrgyzstan’s Azat Usenaliev and England’s Chevon Clarke, respectively. These two had to settle for bronze medals in the end.
The tournament, which commenced on March 6, is set to conclude today. ANI
