Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Premier League season has been indefinitely suspended. However, this Premier League season must end to prevent the hard work of Sheffield and Wolves to go in vain.
Over the past few days, many have raised speculations about how the 2019/20 Premier League campaign will conclude. The speculations came about after the postponement of several Premier League games as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Some circulated rumors that this season could be void as the 2020/21 season needs to begin on time. However, the EFL, FA and the Premier League issued a joint statement to settle this topic. The statement mentioned that the season will be extended as a result of unprecedented circumstances.
It is crucial to end this season before beginning a new one because this season decides European qualifiers, teams relegated, and other milestones achieved by clubs.
- Liverpool Winning the Title after 30 Long Years!
- Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers May Qualify for Champions League.
- Relegation and Promotion Depends on Season Finishing.
Liverpool Set to Make History
The obvious reason why the season should end is that teams have put in tremendous hard work to get the results they have. Liverpool, who are set to win the title after 30 long years, have had the best ever start to a season in any top 5 European leagues. They have earned 82 points from 29 games. Imagine the disappointment that Liverpool and their fans will face if the season would have been void.
Sheffield United Impressive
Secondly, the all important European qualifiers are decided based on how teams finish in the previous season. The top 4 teams qualify for Champions League while 5th and 6th qualify for Europa League.
At the moment, teams like Wolves and Sheffield United are fighting for Champions League spots. Wolves and Sheffield are level on points (43) in the Premier League and currently occupy 6th and 7th positions respectively.
In case the Premier League season gets void, both Sheffield and Wolves will face severe injustice for their hard work. The possibility of Sheffield or Wolves qualifying for Champions League is even higher as Manchester City are banned because of breaches to financial regulations.
It would be an immense achievement for either of the clubs to qualify for European competitions because of the rare appearances they have had. Hence, it is only fair for the 2019/20 Premier League season to end before a new season begins.
Relegation and Promotion Must Be Decided
Thirdly, it is vital for the Premier League season to end to know the teams that will get relegated and promoted. Each season three teams are relegated that finish at the bottom of the Premier League table and three from the EFL Championship (second-tier of English football) get promoted.
The coronavirus pandemic around the world no doubt has put several sporting events under jeopardy. However, with more than half of the season completed, it is only fair to finish this season’s Premier League before a new one begins.
