If the 2019/20 Premier League Season is null and void, Liverpool have the most to lose in terms of records.
As the coronavirus pandemic worsens over time, speculations increase over the situation of various sporting events. Many of them have been postponed until May or even June.
Highlights: Several Premier League Records will be Erased if Season is Null and Void:
- Liverpool will Lose Biggest Lead at any point in a season amongst many others.
- Sergio Aguero will Lose most hat tricks.
- Leicester City will Lose Biggest Away Win Margin.
The Premier League has been indefinitely postponed until April 30, but many believe this date will be extended as well. Several footballers and experts have highlighted that this season should be “null and void” if it cannot resume by the end of June.
If the season is indeed null and void, several Premier League records set this season will be erased. The most important records have been set by Liverpool, who are in their pursuit for a league title after 30-years.
Liverpool to Lose Most Records
The 2019/20 Premier League season by far has been the best season for Liverpool. They have already broken several records and continue to add more in the bag.
The most impressive Premier League record Liverpool broke this season is the biggest lead (22) at any point in a season for the same number of games played.
With a 25 point lead, with one more game played than 2nd placed Manchester City, Liverpool will inevitably win the league. Another impressive record is Liverpool’s ongoing 22 consecutive home wins.
The previous best was Manchester City’s 20 consecutive home wins between 2011 and 2012. However, if the season is void, not only will this record not exist but one may never know how many more consecutive home games Liverpool could have won.
These are the records that Liverpool has already broken but there are more that they could break. They could achieve the most home wins in a season, the most victories in a season, the most points in a season, amongst others.
However, the most impressive record they can achieve is the quickest team to win the title. They can become the first club to win the title with at least six matches in hand.
Sergio Aguero will no longer be Highest Non-English Scorer
Sergio Aguero’s hat trick against Aston Villa in January helped him surpass Thierry Henry (175) as the all-time leading non-English scorer in the Premier League with 180 goals. With this hat trick he also broke Alan Shearer’s record for 12 hat tricks.
However, if the Premier League 2019/20 season is indeed null and void, Aguero will fall back to 164 goals and will lose both records.
Leicester City will Lose Highest Away Win Margin
Leicester City’s 9-0 away win against Southampton in October helped them achieve the highest away win margin in Premier League history.
This scoreline also helped them match the biggest margin for victory. They matched Manchester United’s 9-0 win against Ipswich Town. It took a team 24 years to match United’s scoreline.
So if the 2019/20 Premier League season is void, several once in a lifetime records could be lost. Liverpool has the most to lose as the barren run of not winning a league title will continue.
