FC Barcelona confirms signing of Antoine Griezmann
Spanish football giants FC Barcelona on Friday confirmed the signing of France’s forward Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.
Griezmann has become the fourth-most-expensive signing in football history, behind Joao Felix, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.
The player will be signing a new contract with the club for the next five seasons with a buyout clause of 800 million euros.
“FC Barcelona has paid the 120 million euro buyout clause to release Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid. The player will sign a contract with his new club for the next five seasons, through to 30 June 2024, with a buyout clause of 800 million euros,” the club said in an official statement.
This enormous figure is actually higher than the release clause of Lionel Messi’s (€700m).
Griezmann ‘ Le Petit Prince ‘ began his senior football career as a member of Spanish team Real Sociedad in 2009, and then departed to join Atletico Madrid.
Position of the striker is not yet decided as the statement reads, “The Frenchman can play anywhere in the front three although his usual position is on the left-wing. Griezmann is a very mobile player who can score and also create goals. He is also very quick on the counter-attack and dangerous with his shots from distance and from set-pieces”
He was also named La Liga Best Player in 2016. He was nominated for both the Best FIFA Men’s Player and Ballon d’Or awards in 2016.
Griezmann was again nominated for Best FIFA Men’s Player and Ballon d’Or in 2018 after his impressive performance at the FIFA World Cup 2018.
However, Atletico Madrid is disputing Antoine Griezmann’s transfer to Barcelona as it insists the Catalans should have paid €200M, not €120M.
