Many big batsmen like – Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Azharuddin, etc. has represented India in the International cricket. The Indian cricket fans like a debate between two big players very much. In the 70s most of the Indians debate between Gavaskar and Viswanath then Sachin and Dravid and now Kohli and Rohit.
Currently, India has many good batsmen but the two big batsmen in the team are Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Most of the people believe that Rohit Sharma is very talented but Virat Kohli is bigger batsman than him.
There is no doubt that Rohit Sharma is a big batsman but still he little behind the current Indian captain. The question is why super-talented batsman like Rohit Sharma is not bigger than Kohli.
What are the reasons which make Virat Kohli a bigger batsman than Rohit Sharma?
#1. Impressive knocks in the early stage of career
Rohit Sharma has made his debut in the International cricket before Virat Kohli but he failed to leave his mark. In the early stage of his career, Rohit has played some good innings but did not get a permanent place in the team.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli has made his International debut in 2008 and showed the hunger of making runs right from his first match for India. In the early stage of his career, Kohli has played some impressive innings and fixed his place in the limited-overs team of India.
This is a major parameter to define the player. In terms of consistency, Rohit Sharma is far behind from Virat Kohli. Rohit’s improved his consistency in limited-overs cricket from 2016 but Kohli is consistent right from the start of his career. Yes, Kohli saw some low phases in his career like – 2011 West Indies tour, 2014 England tour but most of the time he has played cricket with the great consistency.
#3. Impact in Test cricket
The longest format of the game is a major factor in which Rohit Sharma is far behind from Virat Kohli. Since 2012, Kohli has played Test cricket with good consistency.
Rohit’s performance in Test cricket is totally opposite to his performance in limited-overs cricket. Till September 2019, Rohit Sharma did not get a permanent place in the Indian Test team but now he is team’s first-choice opener. Kohli is a permanent player in India’s Test team, since 2011.
#4. Player of big occasions
Rohit and Virat, both have scored many runs for India and many times played a major role in the team’s victory. On big occasions, Virat Kohli has scored more runs as compared to Rohit Sharma. In the last two T20I World Cups, Virat Kohli was the Man of the Tournament.
A few days ago, Kohli became India’s first batsman to score a century in the Day-Night Test. Yes, Rohit has scored 5 hundred in the 2019 World Cup but Virat has played many knocks on big occasions as compared to Rohit Sharma.
#5. Chase Master
Except for Dhoni, Virat Kohli is the only Indian batsman who is very successful in the run chases. There were many occasions in which Kohli chased down the target single-handedly. Rohit has scored most of the ODI or T20I centuries while batting first but Kohli has scored most of the centuries while chasing the target.
