Is India have any young opener to fill Rohit Sharma’s place?
The world has seen many great openers in ODI cricket like – Sachin Tendulkar, Graeme Smith, etc. but; there were some openers who revolutionised the ODI cricket. For example – Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Sanath Jayasuriya, etc.
India has produced many great openers like – Navjot Singh Sidhu, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma who changed the ODI cricket by their playing style. Some openers like – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, were great openers and has scored many runs in ODI cricket, but; Sidhu, Sehwag and Sharma changed the mentality of openers.
Openers who changed the ODI cricket by their aggressive playing style
#1. Navjot Singh Sidhu
Navjot Singh Sidhu was the first opener, who starts batting aggressively right from the first over in ODI match. In the 1987 World Cup against Australia, Sidhu scored 73 runs in 79 deliveries which included 5 sixes and 4 fours. Before Sidhu, classic openers like – Srikanth, Gavaskar had played good cricket for India but with a low strike-rate. Sidhu showed that an opener can also hit the ball out of the park, right from the first over.
#2. Mark Greatbatch
In the 90s, cricket was changing very quickly. In the 1992 World Cup, New Zealand’s Greatbatch left his mark by producing unique shots in that Word Cup. Aggression at the top was established by Mark Greatbatch by hitting attacking and revolutionary shots in the 1992 World Cup.
#3. Sanath Jayasurya
He was the first batsman from Sri Lanka who played cricket without any fear. Jayasuriya changed the ODI cricket with his aggressive batting style. In the 1996 World Cup, he and his opening partner Romesh Kaluwitharana played some attacking innings and changed the mindset of openers. He has scored 13,430 ODI runs in 445 matches with an astonishing strike rate of 91.2.
#4. Virender Sehwag
After Sidhu, many openers played ODI cricket for India. Sachin Tendulkar also came into the Indian team and play as an opener but; Nawab of Najafgarh (Virender Sehwag) revolutionised the batting in ODI cricket. He did not worry about the pitch or climate conditions. In his career, he played the game freely and scored 8,273 ODI runs with an impressive strike rate of 104.34.

This pair dominated the world cricket for almost one decade with their destructive batting. Hayden and Gilchrist were the major reason behind Australia’s success in the last decade.
#6. Rohit Sharma
Till June 2013, Rohit Sharma was not a regular member of the team but suddenly his career took a turn in the right direction when Dhoni sent him as an opener. After becoming an opener Rohit scored three double hundreds. Rohit Sharma is a player with high class. He is the first opener in ODI cricket, who converts his century into big hundred. Rohit has good attacking shots which makes him different from other players.
Who is next?
India has produced many openers but now the question is who will become the next permanent opener for India in ODI cricket? Navjot Singh Sidhu and Virender Sehwag have left the International cricket. Rohit Sharma’s last phase of the career starts as he is 32-years-old now.
Shikhar Dhawan is 33-years-old and his performance graph decreasing day by day. KL Rahul’s is also underperforming. So; this is a big concern for the selectors that who is the next opener for India?
