IPL 2019: DC wins the match in super over from KKR
How can one even summarise the game that just happened last night? Delhi Capitals (DC) did not disappoint Kotla Ground last night and won the match last night from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a thrilling super over by 3 runs.
Deciding to field first by winning the toss DC allowed the visitors to set the target.
KKR Playing XI – C Lynn, N Rana, R Uthappa, N Naik, D Karthik(c&wk), S Gill, A Russell, P Chawla, K Yadav, P Krishna, L Ferguson.
KKR started off shakingly. Unable to form any decent partnership, KKR were reduced to four wickets with 44 runs on the board. Opener Nikhil Naik was an easy breakthrough for DC. After Naik, Robin Uthappa, Chris Lynn, and Nitish Rana also headed back to the dugout in quick succession. Shubham Gill also in a hush to score an extra run for the team got out.
KKR’s X-Factor, Andre Russell came in just with the much-needed energy and brilliantly scored 62 runs off just 28 deliveries. We may be short of words for the man but Russell will not be short of runs. Russell and KKR skipper, Dinesh Karthik formed a much-needed partnership and helped KKR reach a respectable total of 185.
Chasing 186 on a wicket that had always been called slow needed mental support.
DC Playing XI – P Shaw, S Dhawan, S Iyer(c), R Pant (wk), C Ingram, H Vihari, C Morris, A Mishra, S Lamichhane, K Rabada, H Patel.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan unable to replicate his form departed for 16 runs. Prithvi Shaw was then joined by Shreyas Iyer to continue the run chase. The young duo did it fearlessly building a beautiful 89 run partnership with amazing cricketing shots. DC skipper Iyer, played a quality inning of 43 runs until dismissed by Russell.
Rishabh Pant, the star player of DC came to support Shaw but was also sent back to the pavilion early. But by that time, Shaw had already almost finished the game by scoring his career-best 99. The young lad had to return back one run short from the maiden hundred. Despite Shaw setting the platform for the win, DC lost it midway. Despite needing 18 off 18 and wickets still in hand and Ingram playing, DC still required 6 in the last over.
The match was then crawled till the last ball. With two required to win and one to draw, everyone had their hearts in their mouth. Ingram on strike somehow managed to take one run and the match went to a Super Over.
Super Over was no less than a death drama, everyone had their heart sinking. DC batted first and could make only 10 runs. Russell and Karthik came to bat from KKR and Kagiso Rabada came in to bowl the precious over for DC. The first delivery went for 4 runs but Rabada came back strong and bowled some amazing yorkers. Russell was dismissed by throwing away the middle wicket by Rabada’s magnificent yorker in the third ball of the over.
