Marnus Labuschagne’s stellar performances since the Ashes 2019, his continuous hunger for runs accompanied by a perfect technique makes Sachin Tendulkar consider him as his potential heir.
The former Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar lauded Australia’s young sensation Marnus Labuschagne and heaped praises on the ever-rising Australian batsman.
Marnus Labuschagne’s decisive footwork against top bowlers in addition to a strong mental thought process made Sachin Tendulkar laud him and voice his words in appreciation of the Australian youngster.
During his playing days, Sachin’s batting technique and footwork was right from the coaching manual. Therefore, someone of his stature lauding Labuschagne certifies that the Australian has some special talent within him.
What made Sachin laud Labuschagne?
Sachin Tendulkar, currently in Australia to coach his side Ponting’s XI for a charity fundraiser in support of the catastrophic bushfires in Australia, was asked in a press conference to mention a current player who came closest to resembling him at his prime.
“There are a number of players but I happened to be watching the second Test match which was being played at Lords between England and Australia. When Steve Smith got injured in the first innings, I saw Labuschagne’s second innings and I was sitting with my father-in-law,” Tendulkar told the reporters.
I saw Marnus get hit with the second ball off Jofra Archer, and post that, the 15 minutes that he batted I said ‘this player is special’. There is something about him – Sachin Tendulkar on Marnus Labuschgane
“His footwork was precise and footwork is not physical, it’s mental. If you are not thinking positively in your mind, your feet don’t move. So that clearly indicated to me that this guy is mentally strong because if you are not, your feet will not move and his footwork was incredible, so he would be the one I would say,” Tendulkar said in an interview with Fox Sports.
Labuschagne’s reaction to Sachin’s words
The sort of praise coming from a cricket icon like Sachin holds a high value and Marnus was obviously delighted hearing this.
“It was pretty amazing, it’s one that definitely when I saw it I was quick to read it and it really hit me. Amazing words from someone of that calibre. I was very grateful for his words and just stoked really,” Marnus Labuschagne on Sachin Tendulkar lauding him.
In past, Sachin has praised various players including Virat Kohli and Steve Smith but he seemed to be particularly impressed with Labuschagne’s decisive footwork in a challenging situation – like the one exhibited by him in the Lords test against Jofra Archer.
He came as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith – got bruised, played and missed but battled hard throughout. Labuschagne’s thought process during the entire innings greatly impressed Sachin.
Labuschagne’s stellar Test performances
Marnus Labuschagne made his test debut in 2018. However, he proved his mettle in the 2019 Ashes after replacing Steve Smith as a concussion substitute in the second test at Lords – the incident Sachin referred to in his talk. He hasn’t looked back since.
In the 2019 Ashes, he scored four consecutive half-centuries against England and thereby making a mark for himself in the Australian team. He enhanced his growing reputation with a wonderful home run against Pakistan and New Zealand by becoming the leading run-scorer in Australia’s home season of 2019-2020. In the 5 tests that Australia played, he amassed a staggering 896 runs that included 4 centuries along with a career-best 215.
Therefore, Sachin’s compliment for Labuschagne is a testament to his recent good run with the bat and his batting skills.
When Sachin was lauded by Sir Don Bradman
During the early stages of Sachin’s career, Sir Don Bradman – the greatest cricketer of all time, had himself said that Sachin’s batting style reminded him of his own.
“I saw him playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come and look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this player is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on television and said yes, there is a similarity between the two, his compactness, technique and stroke production; all seemed to gel,” Bradman was quoted on his views about Tendulkar.
Is Labuschagne the new Master Blaster?
It’s been a few years since Sachin Tendulkar retired from the game. His contributions have been nothing sort of a miracle. It’s there for anyone to see. He is most certainly right up there with Sir Don Bradman as one of the greats of the game.
Bradman’s words for Sachin must have acted as a confidence booster and allowed him to give his best every time he stepped on the field. Similarly, Sachin’s compliments for Labuschagne might well turn out to be a ‘push-factor’ for a player who has himself been in a great nick of late.
With his stellar performances, Sachin Tendulkar earned the title ‘Next Bradman’. Who knows if Marnus Labuschagne might well turn out to be the ‘Next Master Blaster’.
