Prithvi Shaw returns to Cricket after completing 8 months doping ban.
The U-19 World Cup-winning captain, Prithvi Shaw’s ban ended on 15 November 2019. In July 2019, Prithvi Shaw was suspended by BCCI for the doping violations. Shaw was suspended by BCCI because a substance named as Terbutaline was founded in his Urine sample and this substance is on the WADA Prohibited List of substances.
Prithvi Shaw has completed the 8 months ban but in this period many things changed in the Indian cricket team. Before the ban, Shaw was India’s regular Test opener but now he is not in the selector’s frame of mind. Currently, it looks like Prithvi Shaw’s International career is over. The question is – How this ban of 8 months is almost ending Shaw’s career in International cricket.
#1. Settled Opening pair in Tests
A few months ago, India’s opening pair was not settled in Test cricket. Prithvi Shaw has played 2 Test matches for India as an opener but; in November 2018 he lost his place from the team due to injury. A month ago, India tried Rohit Sharma as an opener in Test cricket with Mayank Agarwal. This opening pair gave a solid start to India in almost every match.
Currently, both Sharma and Agarwal are in good form and it is very hard for the team management or selectors to drop one of them from the team. India also has KL Rahul and Shubhman Gill as a backup opener for the Tests. Similarly, in limited-overs cricket, India has openers (like – Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul) who are performing well. So; it is very tough for the Prithvi Shaw to come back in India’s senior team again.
#2. Selectors started looking beyond Shaw
The Indian selectors have started looking beyond Shaw in the opening slot. In the Test series against South Africa and Bangladesh, India had included Shubman Gill as their backup opener. Shubman has not played a single Test match, yet.
But; in the future, if Rohit or Agarwal did not perform then most probably team management will consider Gill as an opener. As selectors are now considering Gill as a backup opener so; it is very hard for Shaw to make a comeback.
How Shaw can make a comeback in the National team?
After completing the ban, it is not going to be easy for Prithvi Shaw to make a comeback in the national team. It is a very tough task for him to make a comeback but not an impossible task.
To make a comeback in the team, Shaw has to score more runs than all other players in the domestic cricket. With the domestic cricket, he also has to show his impact in the upcoming IPL season. If he scores thousands of runs in domestic cricket then he can make a comeback in the Indian team.
